Job summary

U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) seeks an experienced Director and Chancellor to serve as the senior executive leader.

This role provides strategic vision and oversight across academic, operational, and administrative functions of a defense-focused graduate institution, guiding innovation and mission execution in alignment with DAF priorities. The successful candidate will report directly to the AU Commander and AFIT President at Maxwell AFB, AL, and must bring executive leadership

Qualifications

• Executive leadership or command-level experience.
• Understanding of the Department of the Air Force, the Department of War, and joint and combined operations.
• Senior leadership experience in a large, dynamic organization; must be a SES member, a civilian, or a civilian retired from the Air Force (rank not below O-7).
• Ability to articulate AFIT's vision and strategy to diverse audiences in public and private sectors and academic partners.

Job description

The Director and Chancellor serves as the Institute's senior executive leader, providing strategic vision/executive oversight across all academic, operational, and administrative functions of a complex, defense-focused academic institution, driving innovation and mission execution in support of DAF and national security priorities. This senior-level, Administratively Determined (AD), federal civil service position reports directly to the AU Commander and President at Maxwell Air Force Base, AL.

REQUIRED MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS: Executive leadership or command-level experience.

• A comprehensive understanding of the Department of the Air Force, the Department of War, and joint and combined operations.
• Leadership experience at the senior level in a large and dynamic organization; by law, the incumbent must be a member of the Senior Executive Service, a civilian individual, or a civilian retired from the Air Force in a grade not below O-7.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate AFITs vision and strategy to a wide range of diverse audiences in the public and private sectors and academic partners.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Earned advanced academic degree required; PhD or equivalent terminal degree desired not required.
• Experience in building partnerships with other academic institutions, both civilian academic institutions and government academic institutions.
• Familiarity with the DoW e.g. its organization, policies, operations, etc.
• Strategic-thinking and an outward-looking approach
• Experience in developing and advancing organizations
• Commitment to ensuring that AFIT endures as a preeminent, defense-focused graduate research and continuing education institution through fostering effective partnerships with the private, government and academic sectors.
