This is OUR story... and YOUR next chapter
At HCA Healthcare, our Digital Transformation and Innovation (DT&I) team is redefining what’s possible inpatient care. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, automation, and digital technologies, DT&I is helping drive meaningful improvements in clinical outcomes, reduce manual workload, and expand the reach of our care teams. If you're passionate about using technology to improve human life, this is where your work truly matters
What you will accomplish in this role
At HCA Healthcare we are moving toward a model where solution design happens before development. Once a Product Requirements Document is established, an AI Solutions Architect produces a rigorous, machine-readable solution design, the artifact that drives both human and agentic development downstream.
This is a player-coach leadership role, equivalent to Principal in technical depth. You will still produce real solution designs and dive into systems yourself while also setting standards, mentoring, and driving organization-wide adoption of artifact-driven, agentic development.
We need someone who understands how systems work in-depth, rather than treating components such as databases, queues, and models as black boxes. When told \"the database is slow,\" this person asks to see the query plan, the access patterns, and the partitioning strategy before proposing a fix.
As a Leader:
- Build and lead the AI solutions architecture practice.
- Raise the technical depth of the existing architect bench, moving the team from high-level, assumption-driven designs to rigorous, system-level ones.
- Own the organizational standard for the machine-readable design methodology and drive its adoption across teams.
- Partner with product, engineering leadership, and senior stakeholders to align architecture with business outcomes.
- Mentor architects and engineers through design review, pairing, and direct example.
As a hands-on Architect:
- Translate Product Requirements Documents into complete solution designs: components, data flows, contracts, non-functional requirements, and failure modes - for the most ambiguous, highest-stakes initiatives.
- Express those designs as machine-readable artifacts (for example, C4 via Structurizr DSL, arc42 with Architecture Decision Records, or schema-first specifications) that downstream engineers and AI agents can build from directly.
- Validate that systems are built the way the design specifies by working directly in code, queries, traces, and profiles.
What you will do in this role:
Leadership -
- Track record building or leveling up technical teams and practices.
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive adoption of new methods across an organization.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor senior engineers and architects toward greater technical depth.
- Help manage infrastructure and documentation for the architecture organization best practices.
Solution Design -
- Take Product Requirements Document and produce a comprehensive architecture and technology solution roadmap driven by contracts, interfaces, modules, platforms, data products, and reusable components.
- Produce design as a system, not just diagrams: where state lives, what is on the critical path, what breaks under load or partial failure.
- Produce designs precise enough that agents and teams can build from them with few surprises.
- Be hands-on to validate a system by dropping into code, queries, traces, and profiles, and perform code review to ensure quality and delivery is following design.
- Reason about consistency models, partitioning and sharding (including hot partitions and rebalancing), replication, idempotency, and at-least-once versus exactly-once delivery, and the failure modes of each.
- Design agentic systems where non-determinism is a first-class architectural concern: guardrails, evaluations, human-in-the-loop boundaries, and deterministic versus probabilistic seams.
- Use AI to drive development: spec and artifact driven workflows, code generation from designs, and tool/agent interfaces (e.g., MCP).
- Instrument systems and then actually diagnose them: find an N+1 query from a trace, identify a GC pause or lock from a flame graph, define SLIs and SLOs and error budgets, and reason about metric cardinality cost.
- Review metrics of current system performances and recommend the right level of scale, resources, concurrency, etc.
What qualifications you will need:
- Bachelor's degree Computer Science, or equivalent work experience - Required
- Master's degree - Preferred
- 1+ year(s) of experience in a leadership role - Preferred
- 10+ years of experience in technology development, delivery, and operation - Required
- Experience with classical machine learning lifecycle (training, service, etc) - Required
- Experience with operating system at scale of millions of users and/or thousands of events per second and can speak to tail latency (p99/p999), capacity planning, backpressure, and what actually failed and why. - Required
- Hand-on experience with GenAI, LLM and/or agentic frameworks. - Preferred
- Knowledgeable on best practices of security, authentication, authorization, networking, and other full-stack technologies. - Required
- Cloud breadth across AWS, GCP, Azure, etc, with real depth in at least one. - Required
- Familiarity with observability technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana/Prometheus, DataDog, etc. – Required
Work Location/Schedule:
- Remote (U.S. Only) - M-F, 8am – 5pm - Eastern Time
Travel Required:
- This job requires travel to Nashville, TN to attend final interview, 3-day New Hire Orientation, quarterly team meetings in Orlando, FL or Nashville, TN, and other travel on an as-needed basis
- Not offered, now or in the future
