Job summary

SFUSD is seeking a Director of Facilities, Design & Construction to lead planning, design, and construction of capital projects across the District’s portfolio. You will oversee a team of project managers, coordinate with sites, regulators, consultants, and communities, and ensure facilities support instructional excellence and equity.

The strongest candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree and four years of leadership in architectural, engineering, or construction management within K-12

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Four (4) years of professional-level experience managing subordinate management-level personnel in architectural, engineering, or construction management.
  • Strategic leadership and management experience; in a K-12 public educational setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, monitor, evaluate, and supervise the District’s Facilities Design and Construction program, including renovation and new construction projects across SFUSD’s portfolio of properties.
  • Coach a team of Project Managers responsible for directing and overseeing all phases of project delivery from planning and design through construction, close-out, and occupancy.
  • Assist in the identification, development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; assist in resource allocation and levels of service.
  • May serve as liaison between District leadership, school sites, regulatory agencies, consultants, contractors, and community stakeholders.
  • Direct major projects and analyze alternatives; monitor effectiveness and efficiency of operations and implement improvements.
  • Direct allocation of resources within budget; participate in budget development; oversee expenditures; provide options to address cost overruns.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and District policies including building, safety, environmental, and accessibility requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $148,215 - $198,901/annually

Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt (what does this mean?)

Length of Appointment: PEX not to exceed three (3) years. This position is excluded by the Charter from competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

Calendar: Full Time / Full Year

The Facilities Design & Construction Director plays a critical role in ensuring that SFUSD students and staff learn and work in safe, high-quality, accessible, and well-designed facilities. This role leads the planning, design, and construction of capital improvement projects across the District’s portfolio of schools and administrative buildings, directly supporting instructional excellence, equity, and long‑term sustainability.

Essential Duties

The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.

As the Director of Facilities, Design & Construction you will:

  • Plan, monitor, evaluate, and supervise the District’s Facilities Design and Construction program, including renovation and new construction projects across SFUSD’s portfolio of properties.
  • Monitor the work of, and coach, a team of 6 Project Managers who implement construction projects across District Facilities who are responsible for directing and overseeing all phases of project delivery from planning and design through construction, close‑out, and occupancy.
  • Assist in the identification, development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; assist in the determination of resource allocation and levels of service according to established policies.
  • May serve as liaison between District leadership, school sites, regulatory agencies, consultants, contractors, and community stakeholders.
  • Direct major projects and analyze alternatives. Monitor effectiveness and efficiency of operations and implement improvements. Review and approve design documents, cost estimates, schedules, change orders, and payment applications.
  • Direct allocation of resources within budget. Participate in budget development; oversee expenditures; provide options to address cost overruns. Analyze construction costs, budgets, and funding sources and make recommendations to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and District policies including building, safety, environmental, and accessibility requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
The strongest candidates will have:
  • Knowledge of San Francisco’s public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD’s commitment to instructional leadership as a lever toward delivering on the SFUSD Graduate Profile
  • Experience in California K-12 design and construction.
  • Strong analytics and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple functions and roles within a complex organization
  • Outstanding organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to clearly communicate complex, bureaucratic processes to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and GSuite (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms)
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited college or university
  • Four (4) years of professional-level experience managing subordinate management-level personnel in architectural, engineering, or construction management
  • Strategic leadership and management experience; in a K-12 public educational setting preferred
Substitution

Education requirements may be substituted for additional professional-level experience on a year for-year basis.
