Job description

The client is seeking a Director to provide strategic, operational, and executive leadership for a public cultural agency. This role will guide the development of programs, policies, and initiatives that support artists, cultural organizations, residents, and visitors. A key responsibility is creating a strategic plan to shape the agency’s arts work for years to come, developed in partnership with public leadership and community stakeholders.

The Director will lead major cultural functions, including competitive grantmaking, technical assistance, and professional development; administering multiple grant programs and allocating public resources across disciplines, geographies, and communities; and overseeing an Art in Public Places program that commissions, curates, maintains, and promotes a public artworks collection. The role will also support arts education, accessibility, and community engagement efforts, and will provide leadership for the agency’s major cultural facilities and programming.

Working closely with internal and external partners, the Director will serve as a steward of public resources and a catalyst for cultural innovation, helping position arts and culture as essential civic infrastructure that supports economic vitality, community connection, and the region’s cultural identity. The position emphasizes collaboration with leadership bodies, a governing cultural council and related trusts, philanthropic partners, and community stakeholders to advance equity, inclusion, and cultural excellence.
