Job description

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a full-time Directional Drill Operator/Locator with a passion for service and working in underground telecom construction.

  • Understands the complexities of working around underground utilities
  • Possesses knowledge of locating utilities and leading the Directional Drill Team to the successful completion of the assigned project
  • Can operate our Ditch Witch Directional Drill safely and efficiently
  • Responsible for assisting with the daily maintenance of the directional drill, pulling trucks, equipment, vac truck and trailers.
  • Collaborates with the EPS Telecom Services Division and performs assigned duties and work assignments in accordance with EPS quality standards.
  • Responsible for the loading and hauling of the bore rig with dedicated drilling equipment and materials.
  • Feels comfortable operating the directional drill, pulling trailers with equipment. (A Class A Driver's License is preferred.)
  • Capable of mixing boring mud and knowledgeable of additive ratios.
  • Creates and implements the daily boring plan and establishes the bore path.
  • Assists with daily routine labor tasks including utility spotting, duct and fiber placement, equipment placement, equipment set-up and setting underground structures.
  • Assists with hard and soft surface restoration and executes the high restoration standards of EPS.
  • Duties and responsibilities include locating, operating equipment, greasing, lubricating and performing daily maintenance on equipment.
  • Committed to operating and working safely every day and focuses on continued develop and education related to safe work practices.

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

  • Eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record. (CDL Class A License preferred or willing to attain)
  • Locator and Directional Drill Operational experience and knowledge of underground drilling operations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Will need to be able to see and identify colors.
  • Outstanding customer service skills and possesses a keen sense for detail.
  • Works will with both internal and external customers and general contractors.
  • Ability to have good foresight to help anticipate changes in conditions and operations to the greatest extent possible and the ability to react and provide assistance as needed.

Qualifications Set You Apart

  • Proficient in locating utilities and operating underground directional drilling equipment. (3-5 years of experience preferred)
  • Experience operating utility locator to assist with potholing.
  • Class A License with a clean driving record.
  • OSP Telecom experience and knowledge of fiber installation.
  • OSHA 10 and first aid certifications.
  • A Medical Health Card

Compensation Range for a Directional Drill Operator

  • Starting compensation is based on your relevant job experience
  • This role is non-exempt and eligible for overtime compensation
  • The pay range for this role is between $32 to $40 per hour

Physical Requirements/Essential Functions

  • Be able to give and receive detailed information through verbal and written communication.
  • Operate motor vehicles, driving to and from work sites, corporate offices, and vendor locations.
  • Sufficient vision to read instructions, blueprints, documents, etc., as well as to drive in daylight and at night and to avoid hazards on the job site.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors in order to identify fiber color codes.
  • Apply extensive physical mobility (manual dexterity, reaching, bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, arm and leg extension) to supervise and perform routine activities including the ability to climb stairs and ladders, run conduit, etc.
  • Possess extensive arm and hand mobility and strength to lift, hold, reach, carry, push and pull commonly used materials.
  • Able to use power and hand tools on construction site. Able to move tools and materials into and out of vehicles.
  • Regularly lift and move 20 - 35 pounds. Occasionally lift up to 50 to 100 pounds.
  • Walk over uneven terrain, over debris, and other obstacles.
  • Regularly withstand Minnesota hot and cold weather conditions to perform outdoor responsibilities.
