Job summary

VERITA Telecommunications Corporation is seeking a Directional Drill Locator in Northville, MI to operate locating equipment and support HDD installations. You will work with the drill operator to keep bore paths accurate, read construction drawings, and verify depth while ensuring safety and utility clearance.

The role requires 1–3 years of HDD locator experience, familiarity with Digitrak/Subsite, and a valid driver's license; CDL preferred with willingness to obtain.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of experience as a Directional Drill Locator in telecom or utility construction.
• Experience installing fiber optic conduit preferred.
• Strong knowledge of underground utility locating and 811 processes.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and bore profiles.
• Familiarity with tracking systems such as Digitrak or Subsite.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Valid CDL preferred; ability and willingness to obtain a CDL upon hire required.

Responsibilities

• Operate electronic locating equipment to track drill head position and depth.
• Communicate with the Drill Operator to maintain bore path alignment.
• Read and interpret construction prints, bore plans, and utility locates.
• Verify depth requirements and ensure safe clearance from utilities.
• Perform potholing and visual verification of existing utilities.
• Maintain bore logs and production documentation.
• Assist with drill setup, teardown, and site preparation.
• Conduct pre-job safety meetings and adhere to OSHA and company safety standards.
• Ensure job site is restored and cleaned after completion.
• Report underground conflicts, hazards, or safety concerns immediately.

The Directional Drill Locator is responsible for operating locating equipment to track and guide the drill head during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations. This role ensures accurate bore paths and prevents damage to existing underground utilities during the installation of fiber optic conduit and telecommunications infrastructure.

The Locator works closely with the Drill Operator and crew to maintain safety, accuracy, and production efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Operate electronic locating equipment (Digitrak, Vermeer, Subsite, or similar systems) to track drill head position and depth.

Communicate continuously with the Drill Operator to maintain proper bore path alignment and grade.

Read and interpret construction prints, bore plans, and utility locates.

Verify depth requirements and ensure safe clearance from existing utilities.

Perform potholing and visual verification of existing underground utilities.

Maintain bore logs and production documentation.

Assist with drill setup, teardown, and site preparation as needed.

Ability to work in fast-paced outdoor environments.

Physically capable of walking long bore paths and working in various weather conditions.
