Description

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) play a crucial role in assisting individuals with disabilities, helping them lead independent and fulfilling lives through various support tasks.

Assisting with Daily Living Activities: DSPs help individuals with personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation. They also assist with household chores like cleaning and laundery to maintain a safe and comfortable living environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assisting with Daily Living Activities: DSPs help individuals with personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation. They also assist with household chores like cleaning and laundry to maintain a safe and comfortable living environment.
  • Health Monitoring: DSPs monitor the health and well-being of the individuals they support, reporting any changes in behavior or physical health to appropriate personnel. They may also assist with medication administration and ensure that individuals adhere to their health plans.
  • Behavioral Support and Skill Development: They help develop and implement behavior plans, teaching self-care skills and promoting independence. This includes encouraging individuals to express their personal goals and choices, fostering self-advocacy.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate records of services provided, including progress notes and incident reports, is essential for ensuring continuity of care and compliance with regulations.
  • Advocacy: DSPs advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities, helping them access resources and services that promote independence and community inclusion.
Required task may include but is not limited to the following:
  • Grooming and bathing consumers with low mobility
  • Preparing each Indvidual's room with necessary items like blankets, pillows, medical equipment and bathroom needs
  • Helping participants eat and take medications
  • Making sure they have regular meals and proper medication dosages
  • Monitoring vitals and patient behavior and reporting them to the nursing and medical staff
  • Assisting consumers with mobility needs, transferring them from wheelchair to bed
  • Turning or adjusting patients in bed to prevent bedsores or other discomfort
  • Exercising patients by helping them walk
  • Transporting consumers to activities in the community
  • Assisting consumers with daily tasks

  • Interpersonal Skills: Compassion, patience, and strong communication skills are vital for building trust and rapport with individuals.
  • Direct Support Professionals are essential in empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve their goals and live fulfilling lives, making their role both impactful and rewarding.
