Job summary

United Counseling Service of Bennington County Inc. is seeking a compassionate Direct Support Professional to assist adults with developmental disabilities in daily living and community activities.

Under supervision, you will teach life skills, support independence, and coordinate with healthcare providers, while maintaining accurate records and participating in mandatory trainings.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Outlook for internal e-mail communication.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Responsibilities

  • Teach daily living skills in consumers’ homes and within the community.
  • Assist consumers with health care, finances, cooking, shopping, and personal care.
  • Model and educate on healthy relationship skills and personal boundaries.
  • Advocate for consumers with medical, dental, and other service providers as needed.
  • Monitor and support self-medication administration.
  • Respond to consumer emergencies with appropriate emotional support.
  • Advocate for consumers with family, peers, and community members.
  • Introduce consumers to community resources and assist access to services.
  • Encourage participation in community activities and teach safety skills.
  • Attend staff meetings, supervision sessions, and mandatory trainings.

Direct Support Professional – Supported Independent Living Program (SILP):

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator for the Supported Independent Living Program (SILP), the Direct Support Professional supports, encourages, and teaches adults with developmental disabilities to build independence in all areas of daily life.

Major Responsibilities: Home Support
  • Teach daily living skills in consumers’ homes and within the community.
  • Assist consumers with:
    • Health care needs
    • Finances
    • Cooking and meal planning
    • Shopping
    • Home care and household tasks
    • Personal care
    • Community education
  • Model and educate consumers on healthy relationship skills and personal boundaries.
  • Advocate for consumers with medical, dental, legal, and other service providers as needed.
  • Monitor and support self-medication administration with proficiency.
  • Respond appropriately to consumer emergencies and provide emotional support when needed.
2. Community Support
  • Advocate for consumers with family, peers, and community members as appropriate.
  • Introduce consumers to community resources and assist them in accessing and using these services.
  • Encourage and support participation in community activities and events.
  • Teach safety skills relevant to both community and home settings.
  • Teach, instruct, and model appropriate social and community behavior and expectations.
  • Participate as an active member of the Supported Independent Living Program, Developmental Services, and UCS teams.
3. Record Keeping / Administrative
  • Submit daily timesheets using accurate service codes in the electronic medical record system.
  • Request and submit required documentation from other service providers and professionals.
  • Complete progress notes, monthly summaries, and all other documentation in a timely manner.
  • Maintain awareness of all consumer goals and supports outlined in the ISA and document progress accordingly.
  • Attend staff meetings, supervision sessions, and scheduled agency/division meetings as required.
  • Complete all mandatory trainings.
Requirements
Qualifications/Education & Experience Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred:
  • Direct Service experience preferred
  • Experience with individuals with intellectual disabilities preferred
Skills
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Outlook for internal e-mail communication
Licenses/Certifications & Other
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Reliable transportation to transport clients on occasion
