Job summary

Abraxas Youth & Family Services in Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ is hiring Direct Support Professionals for evening or overnight shifts on a full-time basis. DSPs provide compassionate, person-centered care to individuals with intellectual, developmental, and behavioral health challenges.

Qualifications

What You’ll Do
  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, meal planning and preparation, housekeeping, shopping, household maintenance, and leisure activities.
  • Provide compassionate, person-centered, and trauma-informed care.
  • Support individuals in developing skills that promote independence and improve their quality of life.
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and assistance based on each individual's needs.
  • Encourage individuals to achieve their goals and fullest potential by modeling hope and optimism.
  • Help individuals develop relationships and participate meaningfully in their communities.
  • Transport individuals to medical appointments, community activities, school or day programs, religious services, family visits, and other approved destinations.
  • Maintain a safe, supportive, and respectful home environment.
  • Follow all supervision requirements identified in each individual's Individualized Service Plan and Behavior Support Plan.
  • Work collaboratively with the Lead DSP, Residential Manager, clinical team, families, and other service providers.
  • Participate in ISP development and assist individuals in working toward identified outcomes.
  • Administer medications and accurately maintain required medication documentation in accordance with training, policies, and procedures.
  • Complete daily logs, goal logs, medication logs, incident reports, sleep and awake charts, weight charts, bowel movement charts, fire drill logs, seizure logs, behavior plan documentation, vehicle logs, gas receipts, and consumer fund records.
  • Monitor for and respond appropriately to crisis situations or potential crises.
  • Use approved crisis-response skills and follow applicable best practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, or mistreatment in accordance with organizational policies and reporting requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow the organization’s ethical standards.
  • Assist with annual community home licensing activities and other residential program requirements.
  • Accurately record hours worked by clocking in and out through the organization’s HRIS system.
  • Complete all required annual and competency-based training.
  • Attend scheduled home and office staff meetings.
  • Assist with on-call activities and emergency situations when requested by the Residential Manager.
  • Assist the Residential Manager with special projects related to the organization.
  • Maintain flexibility to work alternate shifts when operationally necessary.
  • Perform other duties or tasks assigned by the supervisor or Lead DSP.

Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate

  • Ability to complete required training and demonstrate competency in assigned responsibilities
  • Ability to perform the essential duties and physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to work the assigned schedule and maintain flexibility when needed
Preferred
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree
  • Six months to one year of direct experience supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities
  • Previous experience in human services, residential services, behavioral health, or a related field
  • Knowledge of trauma, trauma-informed care, and trauma-informed environments
  • Familiarity with Individualized Service Plans and Behavioral Support Plans
  • Experience with medication administration and residential program documentation

Schedule

Candidates may be hired for one of the following full-time schedules:

Evening Schedule
  • Tuesday through Saturday
  • 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Overnight Schedule
  • Sunday through Wednesday
  • 11:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Additional schedule flexibility may be required to support emergency situations, staff meetings, training, on-call needs, or program operations.

Compensation
  • $17.15 per hour
  • $18.15 per hour for weekend hours
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the work environment
  • Ability to assist individuals with activities of daily living and other personal support needs
  • Ability to safely perform residential and community-based responsibilities
