Job summary

Siemens Technology seeks a DC System Protection Engineer to design robust protection architectures for data centers, microgrids and MVDC/LVDC systems in power distribution. You will analyze DC fault modes, coordinate protection schemes and validate designs through HIL testing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; PE or PhD preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of DC power distribution and DC microgrids.
  • Experience with DC fault studies and protection coordination.
  • Hands-on with high-power HIL testing and RTDS/Opal-RT tools.
  • Familiarity with lab testing and high-power electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Architectural design of MV to LV DC protection architectures for data centers, microgrids and MVDC/LVDC systems.
  • Develop DC protection schemes: fault detection, isolation and interruption.
  • Conduct DC short-circuit, fault current and protection coordination studies.
  • Simulate AC-DC networks and protection devices using PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink.
  • System validation: HIL testing and laboratory verification.
  • Provide expert technical analysis for customer projects and design reviews.
  • Contribute to patents and technical papers.

What You’ll Be Doing (Your Responsibilities):
  • Architectural Design: Develop innovative Medium Voltage (MV) to Low Voltage (LV) integrated DC protection architectures tailored for critical applications like data centers, microgrids, and advanced MVDC/LVDC systems.
  • Protection Scheme Development: Design, analyze, and rigorously evaluate DC fault detection, isolation, and interruption schemes to ensure optimal system resilience and safety.
  • Advanced Studies: Conduct comprehensive DC short-circuit, fault current, and intricate protection coordination studies to inform robust system designs.
  • Innovation: Develop sophisticated protection schemes for selective coordination and fault discrimination, and simulate AC-to-DC networks and protection devices using industry-leading tools such as PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, and other relevant platforms.
  • System Validation and Testing: Develop and execute DC protection validation plans, including power-hardware-in-the-loop, controller-HIL, and laboratory testing for DC fault detection, protection coordination, fault clearing, converter interaction, and system-level performance under dynamic loads.
  • Customer Project Support: Provide expert technical analysis and conduct thorough system design reviews to support our valued customer projects, ensuring successful implementation and performance.
  • Thought Leadership: Contribute to the advancement of the field by generating patents, publishing technical papers, and actively shaping our technology roadmaps.
Qualifications:
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required. A Professional Engineer (PE) license or a Ph.D. in a related field is highly preferred and will be a significant asset.
  • DC Power Expertise: Strong knowledge and demonstrated understanding of DC power distribution systems, AC-to-DC networks, or DC microgrids.
  • Fault Studies & Coordination: Proven experience with DC fault studies and practical application of protection coordination principles.
  • Power Electronics Acumen: Working knowledge in power electronics, including familiarity with SiC MOSFETs, SiC JFETs, IGBTs, and GaN devices.
  • Simulation Proficiency: Hands‑on proficiency with simulation tools such as PSCAD, PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, PSS SINCAL, or other relevant tools.
  • Testing Experience: Hands‑on experience with high‑power system HIL testing and troubleshooting power‑electronic‑based systems. Proficiency in RTDS, Opal‑RT, or relevant tools.
  • Practical Experience: Familiarity with lab testing, hardware validation, and working with high‑power electrical equipment is a plus.

The pay range for this position is $102,459.00 - $210,773.00 annually with a target incentive of 15% annually. Actual offer may be lower or higher depending on selected professional.
