Digital Imaging & Mission Support Specialist

Photographic Operations at the Johnson Space Center is seeking to hire a Digital Imaging & Mission Support Specialist for the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) in support of the NASA Enterprise Multimedia and Integrated Technical Services (eMITS) contract.

eMITS is the Agency's enterprise-level contract creating and delivering multimedia and technical communications using the internet, digital platforms, and IT management for NASA's Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) and Office of Communications (OCOMM). From photographing rocket launches and recoveries, to producing engaging videos, to information technology management, to using social media to share NASA's message, eMITS integrates services for NASA IT and provides NASA's communication to the outside world. This is an Onsite role, candidates are required to reside locally in one of these NASA locations: Johnson Space Center

Job Description:

This position is responsible for digital image processing using existing workflows, large-format photographic print production, mounting and finishing; film scanning and archiving. The role supports the complete lifecycle of digital imagery from RAW image processing through archiving and output. This includes mission image processing and delivery during Artemis flights.

Photography experience a plus. The position will provide event support to Photo Acquisitions in a backup capacity.

Functional Responsibilities:
Digital Image Management
  • Process digital image files from RAW (NEF) format to production-ready JPEG and other required formats.
    • Includes working with the Artemis imagery team supporting the mission console 24/7 during flight.
  • Perform image correction, color management, retouching, and optimization using Adobe Photoshop and related applications.
  • Upload, organize, and maintain imagery within JSC's internal imagery website.
  • Film scanning of the JSC Institutional collection of images.
  • Maintain image archives, file structures, metadata, and storage systems to ensure long-term accessibility and integrity.
  • Track work requests, production status, and project completion using established workflow management procedures.
  • Ensure consistency of file naming conventions, image standards, and digital asset management practices.
Large-Format Photo Production
  • Operate large-format inkjet printers and associated production equipment.
  • Mount printed graphics and photographic products to various substrates.
  • Operate and maintain Kongsberg automatic cutting systems for precision finishing and production.
  • Inspect finished products to ensure quality standards and customer requirements are met.
Photography

Photographers are tasked with capturing still photography of a variety of engineering tests, personnel, and other subjects, and events of importance to NASA's human space flight effort, primarily using Nikon Z9 and D6 cameras.

Responsibilities include:

  • Award ceremonies, visiting dignitaries, educational events and NASA special events.
  • Engineering & hardware photo acquisition
  • Official portraits in controlled lighting/studio environment.

The position requires work under various conditions, including in the studio, in engineering labs, outdoors, etc.

Remote, hybrid, and onsite positions the employee bears travel costs to nearest NASA Center for badging and issue of NASA IT equipment.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Education: Associate's degree in information technology, Graphic Communications, Digital Imaging, Photography, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Experience: Experience with digital image processing and large-format print production.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and pass a National Agency Check (NAC) security clearance.
  • Must communicate in a friendly and professional manner with NASA personnel, follow government protocol standards, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have the ability to work well with customers, management, and fellow employees at all levels in a team environment.
  • Adobe Creative Cloud, with emphasis on:
    • Photoshop
    • Illustrator
  • Microsoft Office 365, including: Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, OneNote, Box, OneDrive
Hardware & Systems
  • Kongsberg automatic cutting systems
  • Digital asset management and image archiving systems
  • Windows-based workstations and peripheral devices
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move print media, mounting materials, and equipment components as required (~50lbs).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while operating production equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Photography experience
  • Experience with photography workflows and RAW image processing.
  • Knowledge of color profiling and color management systems.
  • Experience supporting production environments that integrate creative software, printing equipment, and IT infrastructure.
  • Education should include use of computers for photographic applications.
  • Knowledge and experience with DSLR.
  • Experience with Python or PowerShell coding a plus.
  • Must provide a high degree of technical and creative capability, artistic vision, independent judgment, and ability to cooperate with company and non-company personnel.
  • Must be detail oriented, keep accurate scientific data, and perform basic mathematical calculations for problem solving.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Adherence to quality control, safety, operations, administrative, and security procedures including reporting will be required.
