About the Role

The Straits Times interactive graphics team is looking for a creative Digital Graphics Designer to join our team in the newsroom. You would be working alongside journalists, developers, designers, and editors to create original digital content for our readers. If you have a passion for illustration, storytelling, journalism, and the craft of designing digital experiences, please apply to join our dynamic team.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with journalists and data visualisation developers to understand requirements and translate them into visual designs that accurately represent the underlying data, editorial angle or product request
  • Assist in designing, illustrating and prototyping data visualisations, visual stories, social media assets using various tools and technologies
  • Collaborate with the UX team to ensure that interactive graphics are user-friendly, responsive, and accessible across various devices.
  • Help to document the design process, including any issues or challenges encountered during the design stages
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to continually improve and innovate our interactive content.
  • Carry out investigative journalism/research with journalists using data, including conducting interviews and finding/verifying data sources
  • Use various statistics and data science tools for data parsing, scraping and wrangling
  • Manage workflow and process for data-driven stories in the newsroom
  • Thoroughly test and troubleshoot interactive graphics to ensure functionality and performance standards are met.

Requirement

  • Proficiency in industry-standard 3D modelling and rendering software and familiarity with 2D illustration.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), spatial analysis tools, and data visualisation platforms are a plus.
  • Experience with augmented reality (AR) design is a plus.
  • Excellent creative and artistic abilities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality, accurate work.
  • Familiarity with the news industry and an interest in current events.
  • Experience in managing time effectively to meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining the quality of work.
  • Prior experience in a data visualisation role / visual storytelling will be preferred
