Job summary

The City of Douglasville in Georgia seeks a Digital Forensic Examiner to conduct meticulous recovery and analysis of data from digital devices for investigative purposes. The incumbent may be temporarily assigned to other duties in support of the Investigations Division based on needs.

You will maintain chain of custody, prepare detailed forensic reports, testify in court as required, and collaborate with detectives, prosecutors, and other agencies to support investigations.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in a related field; two (2) years of relevant experience.
• Requires additional training and certification in forensic tools including GrayKey, Penlink, Axiom, FARO, and any other specialized investigative programs as directed by the Investigations Division Captain.
• Knowledge of law enforcement concepts, terminology, and operational practices, including criminal investigation, report preparation, recordkeeping, and court and trial procedures.

JOB SUMMARY

The Digital Forensic Examiner performs meticulous recovery and analysis of data from digital devices to uncover evidence of crimes. The incumbent may be temporarily assigned to other duties in support of the Investigations Division based on needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Conducts comprehensive forensic examinations of digital devices and media, including mobile phones and other digital storage devices, to recover, analyze, and preserve digital evidence.
• Recovers deleted, encrypted, or otherwise inaccessible data and analyze digital evidence, including cellular service provider records, to identify patterns, associations, and timelines relevant to investigations.
• Ensures the integrity, security, and proper chain of custody of all digital evidence from collection through storage and presentation.
• Prepares clear, detailed forensic reports documenting investigative methods, findings, and conclusions.
• Assists in the recovery and preservation of digital and video evidence from crime scenes in coordination with the Crime Scene Unit and Property and Evidence Unit.
• Supports investigative operations by assisting detectives with case investigations, follow-up activities, and the preparation of arrest and search warrants on major cases, serving in a civilian capacity.
• Collaborates with internal divisions, external law enforcement agencies, and prosecutors throughout the investigative and judicial processes.
• Testifies in court proceedings at the Superior, State, Juvenile, Administrative, and Municipal levels regarding forensic analyses and investigative findings, and handles bond hearings as required.
• Maintains current knowledge of digital forensic methods, tools, and emerging technologies, including obtaining and maintaining required training, certifications, subscriptions, and specialized forensic hardware.
• Assists in the development and refinement of organizational policies and procedures related to digital forensics.
• Provides additional investigative and technical support to the Investigations Division as directed by the division captain.
• Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Associate’s degree in a related field; two (2) years of relevant experience.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires additional training and certification in forensic tools including GrayKey, Penlink, Axiom, FARO, and any other specialized investigative programs as directed by the Investigations Division Captain.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of law enforcement concepts, terminology, and operational practices, including criminal investigation, crime prevention, report preparation, recordkeeping, and court and trial procedures.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, court decisions, and constitutional requirements related to search and seizure, suspect and prisoner rights, and the custody and protection of evidence.
• Knowledge of City of Douglasville Police Department policies, procedures, and geographic layout.
• Knowledge of specialized law enforcement vocabulary and principles related to identification, detention, and forensic or investigative functions.
• Skill to interpret, apply, and explain complex laws, regulations, and technical information, including maps, diagrams, and investigative documentation.
• Skill to observe, recall, and analyze details accurately and to prepare clear, concise, and welldocumented reports and records.
• Skill to manage time, workflow, and multiple priorities effectively while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
• Skill to communicate effectively in both oral and written form with law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, and the public.
• Ability to gather, assemble, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence, draw sound conclusions, and work independently or collaboratively under pressure and time constraints.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information, operate computers and specialized software, follow oral and written instructions, meet education or training requirements, and work rotating shifts, varying hours, and on-call assignments as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires sedentary physical activity and involves frequent use of the hands and fingers for handling digital devices and equipment, repetitive motion, reaching, grasping, and fine manipulation, as well as speaking, hearing, and sustained visual acuity for detailed computer and forensic analysis tasks.
