Job summary

Vulcan Materials Company seeks a Diesel Mechanic to diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines and mobile equipment across a plant environment in Chester, Virginia. The role requires hands-on troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and collaboration with customers and team members.

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 3 years' experience with heavy equipment, a valid CDL with tanker endorsement, and is willing to work overtime and overnight travel as needed.

Qualifications

Job Summary

Responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines and related systems in vehicles and equipment. Performs routine inspections, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards. Collaborates with customers and team members to provide quality service and support.

Essential Functions
  • Repair and maintain mobile equipment.
  • Service, repair, adjust, and test all mobile equipment that operates throughout the plant to maximize performance and limit downtime.
  • Inspect all mobile equipment to identify and troubleshoot the cause of errors. Perform repairs to address problems when necessary.
  • Handle, install, position, and move parts, materials, and industrial hand tools in a safe manner throughout the shop and plant.
  • Document and record information.
  • Ensure correct and accurate documentation is completed daily and monthly regarding all mobile equipment.
  • Enter and maintain service reports for all the mobile equipment in written or electronic form.
  • Assist in driving heavy equipment and vehicles throughout the plant to ensure production continues efficiently.
  • May assist mechanics in vehicle repair and change tires as necessary.

This involves identifying the problem, diagnosing the cause, finding practical solutions, implementing fixes, and adapting to unexpected challenges.
Education
  • High School Diploma/GED or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.
Experience
  • Three (3) years experience driving commercially licensed vehicles preferred.
  • Two (3) years experience driving ready mix concrete trucks preferred.
  • Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with a tanker endorsement.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Must have sufficient level of education to understand oral and written instructions of a technical nature relating to products and vehicles.
  • Must have excellent driving skills and the ability to maintain satisfactory customer and public relations in performance of duties. Knowledge of general principles and practices of servicing heavy construction equipment is preferred.
  • Must have some knowledge of industrial tools, their uses, and maintenance.

Other Requirements
  • Must be willing to work overtime and extended hours depending on customer and company demands.
  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises.
  • Perform physical activities that require moving your whole body and considerable use of your arms and legs, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
  • Must have knowledge of industrial tools, their uses and maintenance.
  • Travel will be required overnight as business demands.
  • Take an active role in prioritizing safety for yourself and others throughout the operation at all times.
  • Must have and maintain valid driver's license.
Hourly Range

The hourly range for this role is between $24.00 – $38.00. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate’s compensation, we consider a number of factors, including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
