Job summary

Lautenbach Recycling is seeking a Diesel Mechanic III for a swing shift at our Mount Vernon facility (4 x 10s, 1pm–11pm, Wed–Sat; some Saturday hours flexible). You will maintain and repair heavy‑duty diesel equipment and service trucks and processing gear, with a focus on diagnosing issues and performing preventative and corrective maintenance.

Onsite training is provided, and OEM/ASE certifications are valued.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• AA in Diesel Technology, or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience, required.
• OEM certification and/or ASE certification preferred.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred.

Responsibilities

• Apply advanced knowledge of engines, transmissions, differentials, and hydraulics.
• Determine unit condition by inspections and diagnostic tests and identifying deficiencies.
• Perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
• Test equipment after repair to ensure performance and comply with manufacturer specifications; adjust as needed.
• Maintain cost efficiency by using warranty coverage and evaluating service and parts options.
• Maintain accurate documentation of service and repairs in vehicle and equipment records.
• Develop technical skills through ongoing training opportunities.
• Maintain prompt, reliable attendance on scheduled workdays.
• Maintain, organize, and clean equipment and the work area.
• Comply with safety standards and PPE requirements.
• Participate in the on-call rotation as scheduled.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

About Lautenbach Recycling

Lautenbach Recycling is a construction and demolition recycling company serving Northwestern Washington, with locations in Skagit, Whatcom, and San Juan counties. Our diesel mechanics keep the trucks, loaders, and processing equipment running that support our recycling, container rental (Northwest Container Rentals), transportation, and composting (Skagit Soils) operations.

POSITION SUMMARY

Swing Shift: 4 10 hour shifts Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday 1pm to 11pm. (Saturday working hours can be flexible to exact start and end time)

Diesel Mechanic III is responsible for the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty diesel equipment and services. Must be able to troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment. OEM certifications in the trucking and heavy equipment industry, completion of manufacturers' online training, the ability to use electronic diagnostic equipment and access technical information online, and a Commercial Driver's License are valued in prospective technicians. Onsite training is provided to help technicians improve their skills, and technicians are expected to keep current on training.

Leadership Responsibilities

• Delegate and oversee work assignments for Technician I and Technician II.
• Communicate repair status clearly with other departments.
• Prioritize repairs based on safety and scheduling needs.
• Mentor and support newer employees.
• Work independently with minimal direct supervision.
• Identify opportunities to improve shop efficiency.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Determine unit condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests and identifying deficiencies.
• Perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
• Test equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturer specifications; make adjustments as needed.
• Maintain cost efficiency by using warranty coverage and evaluating service and parts options.
• Maintain accurate documentation of service and repairs in vehicle and equipment records.
• Develop technical skills through ongoing training opportunities.
• Maintain prompt, reliable attendance on scheduled workdays.
• Maintain, organize, and clean equipment and the work area.
• Comply with applicable safety standards and regulations, including all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements.
• Participate in the on-call rotation as scheduled.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Enter data efficiently into various computer systems (email, QuickBooks, etc.).
• Apply advanced mechanical repair skills.
• Read and interpret service manuals, repair manuals, and work orders.
• Complete repairs in a timely manner.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• AA in Diesel Technology, or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience, required.
• OEM certification and/or ASE certification preferred.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Work safely in a noisy area with many odors present, including frequent truck traffic and dust from an active recycling facility.
• Regularly lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
• Inspect vehicles to determine repairs needed.
• Maintain good vision to inspect repair work.
• Bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections.
