Job summary

Walters Recycling & Refuse is seeking a Diesel Mechanic II to service and maintain our fleet of diesel and CNG waste-collection vehicles. The role emphasizes safety, DOT health card compliance, and strong diagnostic skills for complex machinery.

You will work on a variety of chassis and refuse bodies, use diagnostics, and meet productivity goals while ensuring uptime and customer satisfaction. Compensation includes a stay-on bonus up to $10,000 and a first-shift schedule.

Qualifications

• 2-year technical degree
• 10+ years of experience in related industry
• 15 years of experience including but not limited to: air brake systems, engine diagnostics and repairs, troubleshooting electrical issues, hydraulic systems, suspension, advanced repairs
• Familiarity with CMMS and computer diagnostic equipment

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair diesel and CNG powered trucks and equipment
• Inspect, diagnose, and repair fleet vehicles to meet safety and performance standards
• Operate fleet maintenance software and diagnostic tools
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance within estimated repair times
• Complete company training programs and comply with safety policies
• Possess ability to read manuals and work orders, and participate in test drives as needed

Job Summary

As a Diesel Mechanic II, you will be responsible for servicing and maintaining our fleet of diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) waste collections vehicles and equipment while providing outstanding service to our customers, both internal and external.

This position is Safety Sensitive. It requires drug and alcohol testing in compliance with 49 CFR part 382, this includes marijuana. This position also requires an active DOT health card. To get a DOT health card, candidates must have a valid Minnesota Drivers License.

Primary Job Duties

• Keep work area clean and safe and adhere to all safety policies at all times.
• Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance as needed on our entire fleet of vehicles and other equipment. Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel and CNG powered trucks, as well as other equipment within our fleet.
• Meet or exceed mechanic productivity goals as well as schedule compliance goals. Perform test drives and service calls for emergency breakdowns as needed.
• Ability to learn and operate fleet maintenance software and diagnostic equipment.
• Chassis component repair and maintenance on a variety of chassis throughout the fleet. Inspect, diagnose, and repair Refuse bodies, including controls, hydraulic and electrical systems, Air and hydraulic braking systems diagnosis and repairs, Engine repair and maintenance. Inspect, diagnose, and repair suspension, drivetrain and steering systems, heating, and air conditioning systems
• Use vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes to initiate or assign repairs
• (If qualified, will need to satisfy Walters driver qualifications standards) May perform test drives, service calls for emergency breakdowns as needed or transport Walters vehicles, commercial or non-commercial.
• Perform all work within the Estimated Repair Times (ERT)
• Minor welding as necessary
• Troubleshoot issues using a variety of electronic tools
• Complete applicable Company training programs
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

• 18 years of age or older & eligible to work in the US
• 2-year technical degree and 10+ years of experience in related industry, or 15 years of experience including but not limited to:
  • Air Brake systems
  • Engine diagnostics and repairs
  • Troubleshooting electrical issues
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Suspension, Advanced repairs
  • Familiarity with computer diagnostic equipment and procedures
  • Ability to visually diagnose mechanical issues.
  • Ability to read service and repair manuals.
  • Ability to read work orders.
  • Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Software)
• Certifications from Kenworth, Freightliner, Peterbilt, Allison Transmission, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, etc.
• Must have Valid Driver's License
• Must meet Driver qualifications standards set by Walters Recycling & Refuse.
• CDL Preferred

Physical Requirements:

• Lifting to 50 lbs. Motor coordination with finger dexterity, exposure to chemicals, and physical environment with dirt, odors, noise, and weather extremes.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, DOT health evaluation, and physical assessment
