Job summary

LUMA Energy in Puerto Rico seeks a Diesel Mechanic for fleet vehicles and heavy equipment. You will inspect, maintain, and repair diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical systems.

The role requires reading schematics, welding and fabrication skills, and coordinating with a supervisor. You will also complete inspection sheets and participate in storm restoration work as needed.

The position is full-time, on site in San Germán, with travel approx. 30%.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 3 years of experience performing automotive mechanic tasks.
  • Self-starter and detail oriented.
  • Experience with basic Microsoft Office programs.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles and equipment, including hydraulic systems.
  • Repair, remove, and install fuel pumps and related components.
  • Repair and adjust transmissions and drive components.
  • Inspect electrical systems and diagnose faults with appropriate tools.
  • Read schematics and blueprints for repairs.
  • Record maintenance on inspection sheets per program.
  • Drive heavy duty vehicles for in-work or tow operations.
  • Perform storm restoration tasks as assigned.

Job description

Job Summary:

The main responsibility of the Diesel Mechanic, Fleet is for the inspection, maintenance and repair of vehicles and special equipment installed in said units, including hydraulic systems. Receive instructions from the supervisor, who reviews the work to make sure it conforms to established regulations and procedures.

Job Description:
  • Repairs, removes and installs fuel pumps, including disassembling, cleaning, checking parts for wear or damage, replacing parts, and assembling or replacing said components.
  • Repairs automatic and standard transmissions such as cleaning, disassembly, inspection of parts to determine damage or wear, replacement or repair of parts, assembly and adjustments and connections of the same.
  • Repairs shafts and differentials such as adjustment of nuts, rivets of sprockets, drive shafts, replacement of ball, tapering and satellite boxes, and hydraulic auxiliary steering systems
  • Repairs and adjusts special equipment, such as ground drillers, hydraulic cranes, rotation ladders, hydraulic baskets, bucket trucks, digger derricks, and similar equipment.
  • Examines and repairs automatic and standard transmissions.
  • Tests and repairs vehicle electrical components, such as generators, alternators, voltage regulators, starters, electric horns, windshield wiper motors, and other electrical components, by using voltage and amperage testing equipment and appropriate tools.
  • Cuts around generator and starter electrical switches.
  • Turns and grinds engine cylinders to precise sizes and adjust the pistons for each cylinder.
  • Turns drums and grinds brake cylinders when necessary.
  • Installs special equipment in trucks using electrical and autogenous welding equipment and tools such as forges, anvils, chop blocks, chisels, sledgehammers and other similar tools.
  • Fills out the inspection sheets for vehicles according to the maintenance program.
  • Drives heavy duty vehicles to perform duties or to be repaired in another workshop, such as, a tow truck to tow vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Inspects the assigned vehicle before departure, makes minor repairs in cases of unforeseen situations, such as changing tires and inform the supervisor about defects or damage you have observed in the vehicle such as lack of horn, lights, spare tire and plates; loose brakes and worn tires.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs vehicles and special equipment installed in said units, including hydraulic and aerial equipment.
  • Inspects and repairs brakes, shock absorbers, springs, universal joints, front axle, cooling systems and so forth.
  • Delegates, directs, and verifies the work of three to five employees.
  • Uses the FMIS Fleet Management Information System to input and research maintenance history information as needed Good Welding and Fabricating skills.
  • Reads and interprets schematics and blueprints.
  • Follows all policies and procedures.
  • Performs major storm restoration work and associated tasks as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Medical Examination 3 years of experience in the tasks performed as an Automotive Mechanic
  • This is skilled labor that involves the application of automotive mechanics knowledge
  • Self-starter and detail oriented.
  • Experience with basic Microsoft Office programs
License/Certifications
  • Valid Puerto Rico driver’s license Category 9 is required
  • Permit to Operate Commercial Vehicle from The Transport and Other Public Services Bureau (NTSP, “Negociado de Transporte y Otros Servicios Públicos de Puerto Rico”).
  • Driver’s Record (DTOP)
  • Hold a Automotive Technician in Mechanics of Heavy Equipment and Trucks license issued by the Puerto Rico Examining Board of Automotive Mechanics and Technicians.
  • Special Endorsement for hazardous materials from NTSP, is preferred
  • ASE Certification (T-Series 1-8) is preferred.
