Job summary

Metalico is seeking a Maintenance Diesel Mechanic to service on-road and yard equipment, perform preventative maintenance on diesel and non-diesel machinery, and troubleshoot a variety of vehicle systems across multiple yard locations.

The role requires basic knowledge of vehicle systems, hands-on skills with tools, and the ability to work independently or in a team in an industrial setting. Safety, DOT, and company guidelines are essential to daily duties.

Qualifications

  • Certification from an accredited technical school or 1–2 years of related work experience.
  • Preferred experience or coursework in diesel mechanics and machine repair practices.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of basic hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of bearing, gear, belt, and chain inspection and lubrication.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and math skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Ability to work autonomously or as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine vehicle maintenance (fuel trucks, brakes, lights, etc.).
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance on diesel vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Maintain and service semitrucks and trailers (lowboys, dumps, car haulers).
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel and gas engines.
  • Diagnose and repair semi-trucks and trailers.
  • Repair, replace, recondition, disassemble, weld and inspect parts and engines.
  • Inspect brakes, steering, bearings and related components.
  • Perform oil changes, battery checks and lubrication.
  • Maintain knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems for preventive maintenance and simple repairs.
  • Use diagnostic tools to test vehicle components.
  • Conduct quality inspections.
  • Specialize in transmission systems.
  • Comply with safety, DOT, and corporate guidelines.
  • Complete assignments timely and perform other duties as required.

Job description

The Maintenance Diesel Mechanic is responsible for servicing and repairing all on-road and all yard equipment. Will perform preventative maintenance on diesel and non-diesel equipment and trucks. This position requires basic knowledge of vehicle systems to perform routine maintenance and repairs. Will also work on equipment and machines in multiple yard locations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform routine vehicle maintenance (fuel trucks, adjust brakes, fix lights and other small mechanical problems).
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance on all diesel vehicles, heavy equipment such as material handlers, loaders, excavators, forklifts, etc.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance on all semi-trucks and trailers (lowboys, dump, car haulers, etc.)
  • Troubleshoot and repair all types of diesel and gas engines.
  • Diagnose and repair semi-trucks and trailers.
  • Repair, replace, recondition, disassemble, weld, and examine parts and engines.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper working condition.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Maintains a basic knowledge of a vehicle's mechanical an electrical system to perform basic preventative maintenance and some repair functions.
  • Use diagnostic tolls to test vehicle components.
  • Perform quality inspections.
  • Specialize in vehicle transmission systems.
  • Works in accordance with all federal and corporate compliance guidelines (i.e., safety, DOT, MOT).
  • Perform assignments in a timely manner.
  • Perform other facility maintenance duties.
  • Learn and work in accordance with procedures and instructions. Policies and safety, environmental and security rules and guidelines.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certification from an accredited technical school or; 1 or 2 years of related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred experience or coursework in diesel mechanics, maintenance principles and machine repair practices.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of basic hand and power tools, and proper use.
  • Knowledgeable on the proper inspection, removal, installation and alignment, and lubrication of bearings, gears, belts, and chains.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and math skills.
  • Stonge analytical skills and theoretical background in mechanical systems.
  • Work autonomously or act as an effective team member, exhibiting good inter-personal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Walking: Frequent walking throughout the facility both indoors and outdoors, and on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery.
  • Carrying: Occasional carrying of light objects.
  • Pushing: Infrequent pushing of objects, possibly related to production support.
  • Pulling: Infrequent pulling of objects, possibly related to production support.
  • Bending: Occasional bending during production support.
  • Reaching: Infrequent reaching with hands and arms.
  • Handling: Frequent handling of parts and/or tools.
  • Other: Frequent use of computer, keyboard, and monitor.
  • Specific vision includes close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other computer components.
  • Lift product and other objects of various shapes, sizes and weights (up to 50 lbs with or without assistance occasionally).
  • Physically able to participate in sessions, presentations, and meetings.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Outside work in the Yard is where temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain) may be encountered.
  • Work will take place in an industrial environment, with noise, dust and fumes.
  • Noise level in the work environment can be moderate at times.
