Job description

Pay Rate: Hourly, based on experience (or negotiated contract rate for mobile techs)

We're hiring a Diesel & Chassis Technician to own the engine, transmission, and chassis side of our Class A service line — the diesel pushers our customers live in, store with us, and bring to us when something on the dash lights up.

The person who succeeds here plugs in before they pick up a wrench. You live in the diagnostic software, read live data and fault codes like a second language, and can tell a customer why it failed — not just what you replaced.

We're building this line of business, so we're flexible on how you start: part-time, a set number of days a week, or as a mobile tech who works our customers' coaches on our lot and in our storage. As the work grows — and it will — this becomes a full-time bay in our new purpose-built facility.

The nearest real diesel-pusher chassis options for North Houston coach owners today are 45–70 minutes south. Convenience RV is a vertically-integrated Class A RV operation in Willis, TX — sales, parts, service, storage, rentals, collision — and we intend to be the answer to "who can work on my Freightliner chassis up here?" If you want to build that reputation with us, read on.

Growth Path

This position starts flexible on purpose — we would rather have the right diesel technician two or three days a week than the wrong one five. As Phase 1 brings our new facility online, the diesel line gets a dedicated heavy bay, our diesel diagnostic tool package, and a full-time seat. As volume grows, this role is expected to become Lead Diesel Technician, with a say in hiring and training the techs who join you.

What Your Day Looks Like:
  • Diagnostics: Connecting to engine, transmission, and chassis controllers with OEM and multi-brand software; reading fault codes and live data; running regens, parameter checks, and guided tests; writing up cause and correction.
  • Engine & aftertreatment repair: Cummins, Caterpillar, and similar diesel repair — fuel system, turbo, cooling, charging and starting; DPF, DOC, and SCR/DEF system diagnosis and repair.
  • Transmission & drivetrain: Allison transmission diagnostics, fluid and filter service, TCM programming, driveline and U-joint work.
  • Chassis, brakes & suspension: Air brake systems, air suspension and leveling, steering, alignment-related checks, hubs and bearings on Freightliner, Spartan, and similar chassis.
  • Preventive maintenance: Chassis and engine PM services built in Fullbay — oil, fuel/air filters, coolant, belts, and inspection checklists, including Onan and Cummins generators.
  • Documentation & parts: Clocking time against Service Orders in Fullbay, photo and data documentation, and getting part numbers to Parts with what you need and when.
Required:
  • 5+ years diagnosing and repairing heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, and chassis — Class A motorcoach, heavy truck, bus, or fleet experience.
  • Fluent with electronic diagnostics. You can independently use tools such as Cummins INSITE, Allison DOC, Freightliner/Detroit DiagnosticLink, a Noregon/JPRO-style multi-brand platform, and a scan tool — and you know when to trust the data and when to verify it.
  • Your own hand tools. Mobile applicants should have a service truck or van with the tools to work on-site.
  • Clean MVR at hire and annual recheck. Position is conditioned on insurability under the company’s commercial auto policy.
  • Texas non-commercial Class B driver’s license (or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire) to road-test and move Class A motorhomes over 26,001 lbs GVWR.
  • Comfortable documenting work in shop software (labor time, notes, photos).
Preferred:
  • ASE certifications — Medium/Heavy Truck (T-series), especially T2 Diesel Engines, T3 Drive Train, T4 Brakes, T5 Suspension & Steering, T6 Electrical, and T8 PM Inspection. Master Truck Technician a plus.
  • OEM training from Cummins, Allison, Freightliner Custom Chassis, or Spartan.
  • Onan / Cummins generator service and repair experience.
  • CDL Class A preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with Fullbay shop software helpful but not required.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
  • On-site in Willis, Texas, and on customer coaches in our storage and on our lot. Remote work is not applicable.
  • Schedule is flexible to start: full-time Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, or an agreed set of days per week, or scheduled mobile appointments.
  • Shop and outdoor work in Texas weather; working under coaches, in engine bays, and on roofs; diesel exhaust and fluids with PPE provided.
  • Lifting requirements: 50 lbs frequent, 75 lbs occasional, team-lift or equipment for heavier components.
  • Road-testing coaches on public highways.
  • Employee (full- or part-time): Hourly pay commensurate with experience, non-exempt — eligible for overtime pay at 1.5× for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
  • Mobile / independent contractor: competitive flat or hourly rate, negotiated based on your rate sheet and tools.
  • Production incentive — a performance-based incentive tied to billed diesel labor hours, established as the line grows.
  • Benefits (employees): Health, dental, and vision insurance available; paid time off; employee discount; professional development assistance, including OEM training and ASE testing.
  • Career growth: a full-time, dedicated diesel bay and a path to Lead Diesel Technician as Phase 1 opens.
