Job summary

Vulcan Materials Company in Georgia is seeking candidates for the Diesel Apprentice Program. The role starts pay at $27-$35 per hour and emphasizes hands-on learning with an in-house mentor, manufacturer trainings, and quarterly reviews.

This is an in-office, onsite opportunity designed to develop skilled mechanics for our plant fleet. You will promote safety, service and repair of mobile equipment, inspect and document work, and perform general physical tasks in all weather.

Qualifications

  • Experience with diesel or heavy construction equipment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of servicing heavy construction equipment is preferred.
  • Willingness to work overtime and outdoors in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety as a priority during operations.
  • Repair and maintain mobile equipment to maximize performance and reduce downtime.
  • Inspect equipment, troubleshoot issues, and perform needed repairs.
  • Handle, install, position, and move parts and tools around the shop and plant.
  • Document service reports daily and monthly in written or electronic form.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks including climbing, lifting, and walking.

Diesel Apprentice Program Details

The Apprentice Program is competency‑based, meaning there is no set time for the program to last. During this time, the following tools will be utilized to support the on‑the‑job learning experience:

  • Competency List – the competency list will show what you have completed and what you still need to learn.
  • Internal Training – “In‑house” training led by competent mechanics while you are in the program.
  • Manufacturer Training – you will have the opportunity, schedule willing, to attend manufacturer training.
  • Mentoring – you will always work under a mentor or senior mechanic. This person will help you learn and understand the trade and the industry.
  • Reviews – you will schedule quarterly reviews with your leadership team. This will give you the time to review your performance and achievements.

Once you have completed all of the competencies and 144 hours of classroom training per year, you will be promoted out of the Apprentice Program.

What You’ll Do
  • Promote safety. Per MSHA and Vulcan standards, take an active role in prioritizing safety for yourself and others throughout the operation at all times.
  • Repair and maintain mobile equipment. Service, repair, adjust, and test all mobile equipment operating throughout the plant to maximize performance and limit downtime.
  • Inspect equipment and materials. Inspect all mobile equipment to identify and troubleshoot the cause of errors. Perform repairs to address problems when necessary.
  • Handle and move objects. Safely handle, install, position, and move parts, materials, and industrial hand tools throughout the shop and plant.
  • Document and record information. Ensure that correct and accurate documentation regarding all mobile equipment is completed daily and monthly. Enter and maintain service reports in written or electronic form.
  • Perform general physical activities. Perform physical activities that require moving your whole body and considerable use of your arms and legs, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
Qualifications
  • Experience – previous experience working on diesel or heavy construction equipment is preferred. Additional vocational/trade school training in a mechanical field is also preferred.
  • Knowledge of best practices – knowledge of general principles and practices of servicing heavy construction equipment is preferred.
  • Flexibility – must be willing to work overtime and extended hours depending on customer and company demands. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate exposure to loud noises.
  • Mechanical skills – must have some knowledge of industrial tools, their uses, and maintenance.
