Job description

The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic with the Department of Transportation offers a chance to support safe travel across Erie County. This position focuses on maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and equipment that support safe and reliable transportation services in Erie County. You will play a key role in ensuring the equipment used by road crews remains in top working condition. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Engine and System Repairs: Perform repairs on engines, transmissions, cooling systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic components
  • Preventative Maintenance: Complete routine inspections, tune-ups, tire changes, and adjustments to ensure safe operation
  • State Inspections: Conduct official state safety and emissions inspections and complete all required documentation
  • Diagnostic Work: Use diagnostic tools to identify mechanical issues and determine proper repair methods
  • Equipment Upkeep: Maintain hand tools, shop equipment, and assigned work areas in a clean and safe condition
  • Team Support: Assist coworkers with major repairs and demonstrate correct repair techniques as needed

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hour subject to seasonal change, dual shifts 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Overtime and travel may be required
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 4 or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
Preferred Qualification (not required):
  • Possession of an active Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H).
Additional Requirements:
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
