Job summary

UVA Health is seeking a dialysis patient care technician to support physicians, nurses and other clinicians in delivering patient care and operating dialysis equipment in inpatient and outpatient settings.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, BLS certification, and active licensure or certification such as CCHT/CHT/CCNT; beginning pay ranges from $18.65 to $26.83 per hour, DOE. Experience in health care is preferred.

  • Experience: Prior health care experience preferred.
  • Licensure: Certified as a Patient Care Dialysis Technician by a State Agency or Nationally Recognized Certification Program within 18 months of hire date.
  • AHA Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
  • Certification to use the titles of dialysis patient care technician or dialysis care technician: CCHT/CHT/CCNT or equivalent.

Role Overview

These roles provide essential assistance to healthcare professionals in delivering patient care. They support the diagnostic, therapeutic, and procedural aspects of patient care and work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to enhance the efficiency of medical services.

These positions focus on treating and caring for patients with kidney failure or chronic kidney disease (CKD) and are integral to managing patients who require dialysis. Professionals work in various healthcare settings, including outpatient and inpatient facilities.

Individual contributors with responsibility in a clinical discipline or specialty spend the majority of their time delivering support services or activities, typically under supervision. Opportunities for progression outside this career stream are limited without additional education or significant training and experience.

Basic knowledge of job procedures and tools is required, obtained through work experience and vocational or technical education. The role is performed under moderate supervision and typically involves routine problems, with occasional need for interpretation or deviation from standard procedures.

Minimum Requirements
  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • Experience: Previous health care experience preferred.
  • Licensure: Certified as a Patient Care Dialysis Technician by a State Agency or Nationally Recognized Certification Program within 18 months of hire date.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
  • Certification to use the titles of dialysis patient care technician or dialysis care technician: Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT), Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT), Certified in Clinical Nephrology Technology (CCNT), or equivalent certification or licensure.
Physical Demands

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling; repetitive motion such as building dialysis machines and wrist rotation. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; attention to detail and ability to write legibly; ability to lift, push or pull 50–100 lbs. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, noise, blood or body fluids and infectious disease.

Compensation

The pay range for this role is $18.65 – $26.83 per hour, based on the candidate’s qualifications, prior work experience, and/or education.
