Job summary

Iannarino Fullen Group seeks a dedicated Dialysis Technician to provide high-quality hemodialysis under RN supervision and physician orders. You will prepare dialysate, monitor patients, document care, and respond to emergencies following facility protocols.

Responsibilities include operating dialysis machines, managing vascular access, and ensuring infection control while documenting vital signs and treatment parameters in the EMR. This role requires Certification and strong patient care skills.

Qualifications

  • CCHT certification or equivalent required.

  • Excellent patient care and emergency response skills.
  • Familiarity with dialysis equipment and infection control.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare dialysate per physician orders and procedures.
  • Record pre-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Inspect vascular access sites before treatment.
  • Cannulate access and initiate dialysis per protocol.
  • Monitor patients and document treatments and responses.
  • Adjust flow rates and treatment settings as prescribed.
  • Administer medications per orders and protocol.
  • Monitor fluid removal and adjust as needed.
  • Respond to complications and initiate CPR if required.
  • Discontinue treatment safely and care for access sites.
  • Reinforce patient education on dialysis care.

Job description

The Dialysis Technician is responsible for providing safe, high-quality hemodialysis treatments under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in accordance with physician orders, facility policies, and federal and state regulations. This position ensures proper preparation and operation of dialysis equipment, monitors patients throughout treatment, documents care accurately, and responds appropriately to patient needs and treatment-related emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare dialysate according to physician orders and established facility procedures.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations, and weight.
  • Assess and inspect vascular access sites prior to treatment and report abnormalities to the RN.
  • Cannulate vascular access and initiate dialysis treatment according to physician orders and facility protocols.
  • Monitor patients throughout treatment, documenting vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient responses.
  • Adjust blood flow rates and treatment settings as prescribed and according to established protocols.
  • Administer anticoagulants and normal saline as directed by physician orders, RN direction, or facility protocol.
  • Monitor fluid removal and make appropriate adjustments within established guidelines.
  • Recognize and promptly respond to patient complications, including:
  • Hypotension
  • Needle infiltration or displacement
  • Blood leaks
  • Clotting episodes
  • Cardiac or respiratory emergencies
  • Initiate CPR and emergency procedures when required.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment safely, establish hemostasis, and properly clean and dress vascular access sites.
  • Obtain and document post-treatment vital signs, including weight and temperature.
  • Reinforce patient education regarding dialysis treatments, vascular access care, and treatment compliance.
  • Communicate any medical, emotional, psychosocial, or nutritional concerns to the supervising RN or Advanced Level Provider (ALP).

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Prepare, test, and verify dialysis machines before each treatment.
  • Test machine functionality, including alarms, conductivity, temperature, and safety features.
  • Set treatment parameters and alarms according to manufacturer guidelines and facility policies.
  • Verify the absence of residual sterilants before initiating treatment.
  • Collect laboratory specimens and fluid samples as required and prepare specimens for transport.
  • Perform basic clinical procedures such as dressing changes and bandage replacement under appropriate supervision.
  • Review laboratory results and physician orders relevant to patient treatment.
  • Assist nursing staff with dialysis-related treatments and patient care activities.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Prepare dialysis machines and treatment stations prior to patient arrival.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sanitize dialysis equipment after each treatment according to manufacturer recommendations and infection control standards.
  • Dispose of dialysis supplies and medical waste following OSHA and facility guidelines.
  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure adequate patient care supplies are available.

Documentation

  • Accurately document all patient assessments, treatment parameters, interventions, and patient responses in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Complete treatment flow sheets and required documentation to support accurate patient billing.
  • Communicate changes in patient condition promptly to the supervising RN.
