Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Dialysis Associate, Outpatient - Per Diem - Bethpage. In this role, the successful candidate performs various patient care activities and related services necessary for caring for the personal needs, comfort and safety of the patient with consideration to their age and cultural background. The employee works under the direct supervision of the professional nurse and performs duties as delegated.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides and facilitates the activities of daily living for patients in accordance with the plan of care and dialysis unit flow. Addresses any patient issue with the nurse. Responsibilities include transporting patient to and from treatment area; collecting stool, urine, or sputum specimens; assisting with patients' nutritional needs; taking down used dialysis disposable equipment; cleaning and/or disinfecting dialysis machines and the station of the hemodialysis machine; taking vital signs; EKGs, obtaining patient weight and records. Assembles equipment for nursing staff to initiate treatment. Reports machine malfunctions to service company immediately. Assists with discharging of patient as instructed and guided by RN. Performs and records daily monitoring of water treatment system, operating parameters, to include total chlorine testing.
  • Assists with patient care treatments utilizing aseptic technique and universal precautions as per WUH policy and procedure. Assists with cannula needle removal and aseptic bandaging of needle sites.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities. Supports coworkers in accomplishment of day to day activities and tasks necessary for meeting patient and family needs. Participates in orientation of patients and families. Attends staff meetings and in-services or obtains information presented.
  • Responds to customer needs. Ensures completion of patient care assignment in an organized, efficient manner. Assists patients, families, visitors, and health care team members by answering questions, delivering messages and giving information within the scope of position. Reports all changes in patient condition and pertinent patient information to the nurse, manager or designee promptly.
  • Recognizes and responds to issues that may cause problems and/or refers issues through proper chain of command utilizing the escalation policy. Recognizes the family as defined by the patient and incorporates family‑centered care in daily practice. Documents legibly. Maintains open channels of communication through intra and inter shift reporting.
  • Participates in maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment, including security of patient belongings. Ensures appropriate emergency equipment is present and operational. Responds to emergency situations. Is cognizant of SEOP plan and participates in implementing plan as required.
  • Promotes and maintains patient safety. Maintains call bell within patient reach. Answers patient calls promptly. Orients and re‑orients patients to the patient care unit as needed. Responds to emergency situations as appropriate. Utilizes proper body mechanics when moving patients or equipment.
Minimum Qualifications

To qualify you must have a High School or GED. Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician. Certification is required upon hire or within 18 months of continuous employment as a Dialysis Associate or Technician in any dialysis facility. Excellent communication skills (both written and oral), interpersonal, problem‑solving, critical thinking skills. Basic computer skills. Knowledge of regulatory and WUH policies governing safety standards, infection control, and patient belongings.

Required Licenses

Dialysis Tech – Certification, Clinical Hemodialysis Tech‑Ct.

Preferred Qualifications

1–2 years Nursing Assistant or equivalent.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state law on salary transparency in job advertisements. The salary range for the role is $38.00 – $38.00 per hour. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
