Overview

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (GS-0647-08) - This position is located at Joint Base Langley - Eustis - Langley Air Force Base.

Langley Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Hampton, Virginia, adjacent to Newport News. It was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established after the entry of the United States into World War I in April 1917. Originally designated the 633d Combat Support Group, it was established and activated March 14, 1966, and organized April 8, 1966. It was originally assigned to the 13th Air Force as part of the Pacific Air Forces at Pleiku Air Base, South Vietnam, and later at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.

During the Vietnam War, Airmen of the 633d ABW participated in numerous campaigns, air offensives and Operations Arc Light, Bullet Shot and Linebacker. On Oct. 1, 1989, the wing aligned under the 13th Air Force, and activated at Andersen AFB, Guam, becoming the host unit, providing services for various tenant units. This marked the transfer of Andersen AFB’s control from Strategic Air Command to PACAF.

In August 1990, 633d ABW personnel began shipping more than 37,000 tons of munitions to forces in the Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm—more than 30,000 tons went by sealift, and more than 2,200 troops and 2,200 tons of cargo were processed aboard 200 aircraft.

Responsibilities

• Independently performs a complex and diverse array of screening and diagnostic mammography examinations.
• Performs a variety of challenging mammographic examinations with associated quality assurance and quality control measures.
• Manages patient schedules within the Medical Health System.
• Assists the Radiologist(s) and other Health Care Providers needle localizations, breast ultrasound studies and other related breast health examinations.
• Coordinates imaging for and assists the radiologist and radiology residents in the performance of image guided biopsy, pre-operative wire and seed localization, and post processing images for interpretation.
• Collects, files, and maintains documentation related to the performance of mammograms and resulting studies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Requirement for Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Mammography):

Radiology Certification:

Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field.

• Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.
• Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by Office of Personal Management or the employing agency.

Requirements

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience:

One year of specialized experience which includes: performing diagnostic mammography studies; assisting with performing breast biopsies; maintaining patients examination records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
