Job summary

The Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover is seeking a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer to join a dedicated ultrasound team. The role requires performing diverse ultrasound exams, ensuring patient safety, and collaborating with physicians to support accurate diagnoses.

The ideal candidate will hold an accredited program credential in sonography, RDMS/ARRT licenses, and BLS certification, with experience across obstetric, abdominal, and vascular imaging.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program with good standing.
• RDMS/ARRT certification or equivalent on hire; AB, OB/GYN or vascular options preferred.
• Current BLS certification; ARDMS/ARRT registrations to be maintained.
• Ability to perform obstetric, abdominal, vascular and small parts imaging.
• Strong communication and patient care skills; maintain patient safety and comfort.

Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging using non-ionizing sound waves for patients of all ages.
• Conduct obstetric, gynecologic, abdominal, vascular and small parts studies as assigned.
• Consult with referring physicians on patient history and procedure selection.
• Review charts and requisitions prior to exams; educate patients on procedures.
• Ensure patient comfort, safety, and proper instrument use during exams.
• Schedule patients and manage emergency ultrasound bookings; monitor appointment flow.
• Acquire, archive, transmit, and print images via PACS; report after-hours transmissions.
• Maintain ultrasound equipment and coordinate with clinical engineering as needed.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use imaging devices that emit sound waves to create the image that will help physicians assess and diagnose various conditions. There aredifferent kindsof imagingdevices,this includes ultrasounds, sonograms, and echocardiograms.Generally sonographicimaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections.

A caregiver in this position workseveningsfrom2:00PM – 10:30PM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages.
• Perform ultrasound studies (i.e.obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular).
• Consult with referring physiciansregardingpatients’ medical history and selection ofappropriate proceduresand equipmentrequiredfor proper diagnosis.
• Review charts,previousreportsand requisition prior to the exam.
• Educate patientsregardingprocedures,equipmentand exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
• Ensure patients’ comfort and safety during and after the exam.
• Assistwith scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
• Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations.
• Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided anddeterminepriority of patients based on the daily schedules.
• Acquire, archive,transmitand print images via PACS.
• Completeafter hourstransmission of images andappropriate paperwork.
• Immediately report any malfunctions tohelpdesk and PACS Administrator.
• Process billing via RIS.
• Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
• Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies.
• Assistwith clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers.
• Assistwith orienting new caregivers to the equipment, departmentproceduresand scanning protocols.
• Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors.
• Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities,sitesand/or locations.
• Assistin new investigative techniques,proceduresand equipment.
• Maintain the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance ofappropriate conferencesand symposiums.
• RDMS must bemaintainedand in good standing.
• If working within the Imaging Institute, perform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volumereadingsandassistthe physician during invasive studies.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing
• Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire
• One certification within abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) or vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire. The other two certifications must be obtained within18monthsof hire
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• One year experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

Physical Requirements:

• Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.

Personal Protective Equipment:

• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
