Job summary

Peraton is seeking an Experienced DHS Background Investigator to join our team in San Diego, CA. This full-time role requires residing within 30 miles of San Diego and involves conducting in-person investigations for DHS background checks. Responsibilities include scheduling interviews, performing records checks, and reporting findings in a government system.

A valid DHS credential, U.S. citizenship, and active security clearance are required, with occasional TDY travel.

Qualifications

• Must have DHS credentialing (DHS)
• 4 years of general work experience and HS Diploma
• Must hold active federal background investigation with a T5 adjudication or Top Secret eligible clearance
• U.S. citizenship
• Active NTS (National Training Standards) certification from NIT
• Home office required
• TDY/remote travel 14–30 days may be required
• Accurate typing (40+ WPM) and ability to work across multiple computer programs
• Strong writing and grammar skills for high-quality reports
• Professional attire and confidentiality requirements

Responsibilities

• Travel daily for in-person background investigations to determine employment suitability
• Schedule and conduct face-to-face interviews with subjects, neighbors, employers, and others
• Perform record searches at police, courthouses, educational and financial institutions, and health facilities
• Type and report findings in a government system in a clear, concise manner
• Work independently within a team of investigators and with a Field Manager
• Communicate professionally, maintain attendance and punctuality, and focus on details in field work
• Maintain confidentiality, ethics, and integrity
• Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds, climb stairs, walk/stand extensively, and drive in adverse/night conditions
• Carry sufficient motor vehicle insurance as required
• Maintain professional appearance
