Job summary

The Stafford Gray Group is seeking a senior Build & Release Engineer in Michigan to own end-to-end build, release, and configuration management for enterprise systems. You will drive automation across CI/CD and testing, working with legacy toolchains through modern Azure DevOps in a state government context.

Responsibilities include managing source control standards, designing automated workflows, and acting as Azure DevOps Administrator for multi-environment releases.

Responsibilities

• Manage source code control processes, including defining and enforcing standards, baselining and versioning, branching strategy, and problem resolution.
• Design and script automation workflows for efficient, reliable builds and releases into higher environments.
• Perform build and deployment activities across multiple environments, modifying tasks to move releases through processes.
• Serve as Azure DevOps Administrator for one of the systems, including branch management across Release and Sandbox environments.
• Monitor and optimize build pipeline performance to reduce build times and increase productivity.
• Conduct root-cause analysis on build and deployment failures and implement preventive measures.
• Assess build-process issues to decide what can be resolved internally and what needs escalation.
• Deploy new releases of build automation, configuration management, and version management software.
• Advise development staff on project administration for applications using build automation tools.
• Create and maintain build process documentation.

Stafford Gray is looking for a senior Build & Release Engineer to manage and improve application build, release, and configuration management for a state government client. You'll own the full application build process for two large, mission-critical human services systems: a benefits eligibility system and a child welfare case management system. You'll also drive automation to support CI/CD and testing.

This role is for a veteran configuration management professional who has owned build automation and source control administration in enterprise environments, from the legacy toolchain through modern Azure DevOps.

What You'll Do

• Manage source code control processes, including defining and enforcing standards, software baselining and versioning, branching strategy, and problem analysis, resolution, and tracking
• Design and script automation workflows for efficient, reliable builds and releases into higher environments
• Perform build and deployment activities across multiple environments, modifying tasks and variables at the build and deployment stages to move releases through established processes
• Serve as Azure DevOps Administrator for one of the systems, including creating and managing branches for each development stage across Release and Sandbox environments
• Monitor and optimize build pipeline performance to reduce build times, improve reliability, and increase developer productivity
• Conduct root-cause analysis on build and deployment failures, and put preventive and long-term corrective measures in place
• Assess build-process issues to decide what can be resolved internally and what needs escalation, working across servers with varying levels of access
• Deploy new releases of build automation, configuration management, and version management software
• Serve as technical advisor and primary liaison with vendor development teams
• Advise development staff on project administration for applications that use build, configuration, and version management tools
• Create and maintain build process documentation

Required Experience

• 10+ years of primary responsibility for higher-environment build automation, auditing, and administration of software configuration and version management processes
• 10+ years researching, evaluating, and recommending configuration and version management software
• 10+ years deploying new releases of application, configuration, and version management software
• 10+ years advising development teams on project administration for applications using build automation and configuration/version management tools
