QTS Realty Trust is seeking an Development Program Manager - Electrical SME to act as the technical authority for electrical systems across multiple mission‑critical development projects in Irving, TX. Job description

The Development Program Manager - Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) serves as a technical authority for electrical systems across multiple mission-critical development projects. This role provides program-level leadership for electrical design standards, system architecture, equipment strategy, constructability, reliability, and technical issue resolution throughout design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and turnover. The Program Manager works closely with Facilities, Development, Design, Construction, Commissioning, Procurement, Risk Management, Vendors, Consultants, and Data Center Operations. The role requires strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical issues into clear recommendations for project teams and senior leadership.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as the Electrical SME and technical authority across multiple development projects and programs.
  • Review electrical drawing packages, specifications, calculations, studies, and equipment selections for adherence to company design standards.
  • Drive electrical standards, best practices, quality, consistency, scalability, maintainability, and continuous improvement across the portfolio.
  • Collaborate with internal and external design teams to confirm compliance with established standards, applicable codes, and requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to define project requirements, evaluate deviations from standards, and communicate technical direction to design teams.
  • Support Construction, Commissioning, and Risk Management teams in resolving requests for information, value engineering proposals, and design issues discovered during construction and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with Strategic Procurement to support electrical equipment strategy and review owner‑furnished, contractor‑installed (OFCI) equipment submittals for compliance with standard design criteria.
  • Work with consultants to develop and review short‑circuit, coordination, and arc‑flash studies for adherence to company standards.
  • Evaluate electrical system architecture and major equipment, including utility service, substations, medium‑voltage and low‑voltage distribution, generators, UPS systems, battery systems, switchgear, protective relaying, and grounding systems.
  • Create and communicate program updates, key risks, technical decisions, and engineering milestone status in a format suitable for executive‑level review.
  • Mentor engineers and project teams, support onboarding, and provide technical guidance without direct supervisory responsibility.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend practical improvements to electrical design platforms and standards.
  • Manage multiple projects and technical initiatives simultaneously.
  • Travel up to 25% as required.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8-10 years of professional experience in electrical design engineering, construction, commissioning, operations, or maintenance of mission-critical facilities.
  • 4-8 years of experience leading mission-critical design, implementation, project execution, or technical programs.
  • Experience with power system design, redundant systems, short‑circuit analysis, protective device coordination, and arc‑flash analysis.
  • Experience applying the National Electrical Code (NEC), local codes, and electrical industry standards, procedures, and methodologies.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint for executive‑level project updates and Excel for engineering analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience designing electrical systems for data centers or other mission‑critical facilities.
  • Program management, project management, or technical lead experience on large‑scale, multidisciplinary projects.
  • Direct experience with data center construction, commissioning, operations, or facility maintenance.
  • Advanced knowledge of medium‑voltage and low‑voltage power distribution systems and their integration into mission‑critical environments.
  • Experience with utility coordination, substations, generators, UPS systems, battery energy storage systems, switchgear, protective relaying, and grounding systems.
  • Experience with performance‑based alternatives to prescriptive electrical designs.
  • Advanced multidisciplinary knowledge of mission‑critical systems, design processes, pre‑construction requirements, and construction execution.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical issues to senior leadership and non‑engineers.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
