Job summary

Job Summary

The Development Grant Writer, under general supervision, researches, prepares, and submits proposals and grant applications in support of the University or agency’s ongoing needs and priorities. Assists with strategies in planning and implementing a proactive and effective program of fund development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepares and conducts the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources.
  • Researches institutional information for projects requiring funding, including meeting with or contacting various departments within the University or agency. The information is incorporated into case statements, letters of intent, proposals, and reports.
  • Investigates potential funding sources through a variety of printed and electronic sources to match funding focus with projects.
  • Develops and maintains case statements, letters of intent, and other related materials allowing for prioritization of projects which keeps multiple projects moving in a timely manner in order to meet deadlines.
  • Monitors and tracks reports of submitted proposals and donor activity within departments.
  • Provides writing support for major donor proposals/letters required and assigned by executive leadership
  • Drafts and completes corporate and foundation correspondence or other information associated with offices as required.
  • Assists in serving as a clearinghouse for philanthropic grant requests.
  • Organizes and maintains electronic and hard file copy files.
  • Assists with other fundraising projects as requested.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with faculty, researchers, and institutional partners to develop competitive proposals that align sponsor priorities with University strategic research and educational goals.
  • Reviews, edits, and provides substantive feedback on proposal narratives, concept papers, letters of intent, and supporting documents to strengthen competitiveness, responsiveness to sponsor guidelines, and overall proposal quality.
  • Provides research development support by assisting investigators with project conceptualization, framing of goals and objectives, development of broader impacts, and alignment with sponsor review criteria.
  • Identifies and disseminates funding opportunities from federal, state, foundation, and corporate sponsors and assists faculty in matching funding opportunities with research and programmatic interests.
  • Develops and delivers workshops, training materials, and one-on-one consultations to enhance grant-writing skills and proposal development capacity across the University.
  • Supports strategic institutional funding initiatives, interdisciplinary collaborations, center-level proposals, and other sponsored program activities designed to expand the University’s research portfolio and external funding success.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education – Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Public Administration, Research Administration, Higher Education Administration, Scientific or Technical Writing, or a closely related field.
  • Experience – Two years of experience in grant writing, proposal development, research development, sponsored programs administration, or related professional experience involving persuasive, technical, or strategic writing.
  • A completed master’s degree with a thesis may be substituted for the required experience.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of: Word processing, spreadsheet, and other office productivity applications.
  • Research, writing, editing, and information-gathering techniques.
  • Grant proposal development and funding sources.
  • Ability to: Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet established deadlines.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders.
Preferred Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of grants.gov and other federal, state, and foundation grant access points and submission portals.

Other Requirements Evening and weekend work may be required. Position requires on campus, face-to-face interactions. Position requires maintaining a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

Salary: $48,110.40/annual
