Job summary

PowerFlex, an EDF Renewables company, is seeking a Development Engineer I to support pre-construction engineering for C&I solar, storage and EV charging projects. You will work with Business Development and Project Engineering teams to evaluate technical feasibility and drive interconnection efforts, travel to client sites as needed.

The role requires a B.S. in engineering, 1+ years in renewables, and ability to collaborate across departments while learning PowerFlex systems and processes.

Qualifications

• B.S. degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Civil Engineering or equivalent experience required.
• 1+ years of related experience (renewable energy preferred).
• Renewable Power Distribution Systems experience (Inverter based – Energy Storage & Solar) a plus.
• Power system modeling experience is a plus.
• Experience integrating with building management systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Determine project feasibility of C&I solar PV, battery storage, and EV charging systems and communicate findings to Business Development team members and clients.
• Assist in submitting interconnection applications and coordinating with utilities and external engineering partners throughout the review process to secure approval and Interconnection Agreements.
• Analyze utility interconnection results, determine mitigation strategies, and provide costing support.
• Research and understand interconnection processes, technical requirements and incentive structures across states and utilities nationally.
• Support the request and review of proposals from external engineering and surveying partners.
• Support organization by assisting with process improvements and quality assurance under the guidance of senior team members.
• Provide engineering support during non-ministerial permitting activities and work with external engineering partners to submit application packages to AHJs.
• Analyze site assessments such as rooftop structural reports, civil surveys, ALTA surveys, and geotechnical reports to make determinations on project design and cost impacts.
• Help build rapport with external utility personnel by learning and understanding their changing requirements and the changing nature of the utility industry.
• Perform site assessments alongside engineering partners that may require driving and possibly using ladders.
• Collaborate with greater engineering team to stay updated on company and client best practices to ensure compliant project design for future construction.
• Support evaluation of third-party designs and controls schemes.

The Development Engineer I will provide support to PowerFlex's Business Development team through the pre-construction engineering process. This individual will assist in the overall technical evaluation of Commercial & Industrial (“C&I”) solar, energy storage, and EV charging projects for successful execution by the Project Engineering and Project Management teams. This individual must exhibit good time management and organizational skills, as well as demonstrate the ability to collaborate across departments and externally. This individual will be self-starting, motivated, and passionate about the deployment of renewable energy. Occasional travel to client sites should be expected.

LocationThis role would be required to be a hybrid role out of one of our offices (San Diego, CA, Los Angeles, CA. or New York, NY)

• Basic understanding of software tools such as Helioscope, AutoCAD, PVSyst, and Excel
• Basic understanding of interconnection process and incentive structure
• Ability to support forecasting utility and project costs
• Ability to collaborate cross-departmentally and participate in meetings between various stakeholders
• Good multi-tasking ability
• Basic engineering skills
• Basic understanding of technology options for utility interconnection requirements (relays, SCADA, rapid shutdown, DTT, transformers, service upgrades)
• Basic knowledge of powered generators and control system communication protocols (e.g. Modbus, CAN, etc.)

Compensation

The pay range for this position is $85,000 - $95,000 annually. This position is eligible for PowerFlex's comprehensive Health and Welfare plans including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, 401(k) retirement plan and paid time off. The total compensation for this position may include an annual performance bonus (or other incentive compensation, as applicable). PowerFlex's compensation packages carefully consider a candidate's qualifications, experiences, and education in relation to the position.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a seated position. Long hours on computer keyboard. Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking.

Working Conditions

Approximately 80% of the time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Adobe etc.), telephones, and general office equipment. Possibly 20% of the time is spent traveling to conferences or meetings or field traveling to project sites.
