Corning Inc. in Wilmington, NC is seeking a Development Engineer to design, develop, and industrialize glass forming and melting platforms for revolutionary manufacturing processes at our Wilmington, NC facility - for new Optical Fiber products.

Working as part of a technology development team, you will apply scientific methods, engineering principles, and advanced data analysis to drive fundamental understanding and deliver measurable improvements in yield, quality, process rate, and energy

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a related technology degree.
  • 3+ years of process engineering experience with emphasis on thermal processing of materials, including associated product and equipment performance.
  • Proficiency with data processing software (e.g. Python, JMP, Power BI) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of physical phenomena — static and dynamic physics, heat and mass transfer — and ability to apply this knowledge to improve manufacturing processes and product attributes.
  • Experience managing structured product or process development while supporting or leading a technical team.
  • Fundamental understanding of energy and mass transport with modeling experience (e.g., finite element analysis (FEA), Aspen, MATLAB, Fluent).
  • Fundamental understanding of chemical transport and reaction processes and their impact on product and equipment performance.
  • Experience with modeling simulation software (e.g., Aspen, MATLAB, Fluent).
  • Demonstrated ability to independently carry structured engineering assignments through to completion with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and improve glass forming and melting platforms (process + equipment), driving root-cause understanding of manufacturing process limitations.
  • Define problems, outline hypotheses, design and execute critical process experiments, and translate findings into engineering requirements and process or equipment designs.
  • Manage structured product and process development projects — applying project management methodologies to control performance, scheduling, and cost.
  • Lead or participate in cross-functional technology development teams; set direction, roles, and priorities in collaboration with product and process design experts across the organization.
  • Perform cost-of-manufacturability analyses and use data and modeling to recommend best solutions from a range of alternatives.
  • Communicate and document results clearly for project, department, and site leadership audiences.

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Role

Corning is seeking a Development Engineer to design, develop, and industrialize glass forming and melting platforms for revolutionary manufacturing processes at our Wilmington, NC facility - for new Optical Fiber products. Working as part of a technology development team, you will apply scientific methods, engineering principles, and advanced data analysis to drive fundamental understanding and deliver measurable improvements in yield, quality, process rate, and energy efficiency

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and improve glass forming and melting platforms (process + equipment), driving root-cause understanding of manufacturing process limitations

Define problems, outline hypotheses, design and execute critical process experiments, and translate findings into engineering requirements and process or equipment designs

Manage structured product and process development projects — applying project management methodologies to control performance, scheduling, and cost

Lead or participate in cross-functional technology development teams; set direction, roles, and priorities in collaboration with product and process design experts across the organization

Perform cost-of-manufacturability analyses and use data and modeling to recommend best solutions from a range of alternatives

Communicate and document results clearly for project, department, and site leadership audiences

Work Location, Hours and Travel Requirements

Standard business hours, Monday–Friday; flexibility required for off-hours.

Travel less than 5% (domestic and international travel possible)

Experiences/Education - Required

Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a related technology degree

3+ years of process engineering experience with emphasis on thermal processing of materials, including associated product and equipment performance

Proficiency with data processing software (e.g. Python, JMP, Power BI) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

The range for this position is $85,304.00-$117,293.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
