Job summary

Penguin Random House LLC in New York, NY is seeking a Developer to join the PRH IT team. This remote-friendly role focuses on building scalable web products, collaborating with a small agile team, and delivering value to internal and external users.

You will work across frontend and backend areas, including WordPress, RESTful APIs, AWS, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines, with a strong emphasis on accessibility, security, and modern web standards.

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years’ experience with web-based technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and ES6+.
  • Basic understanding of WordPress development.
  • Knowledge of AWS environment (S3, containers, Lambda, Cognito).
  • Website Accessibility.
  • Awareness of OWASP Top 10 security threats.
  • Strong database concepts; ability to write complex queries (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Familiarity with AI tools (e.g., Copilot, LLM-based tools).
  • Understanding of prompt engineering and LLM concepts.
  • Object-oriented design.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodology and source control.

Responsibilities

  • Work on existing and new web projects within the PRH Applications suite for internal and external users.
  • Build, test, ship, and iterate products during launch and early lifecycle to scale.
  • Collaborate with teams to meet timetables and partner requirements inside/outside PRH.
  • Engage across frontend and backend (full-stack) development, infrastructure, services, and collaboration with business units and outsourced resources.
  • Contribute to flexible infrastructure (AWS), RESTful APIs, and service-based architecture; focus on automation and tooling in the frontend workflow.
  • Communicate professionally with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving and decision-making with good judgment.
  • Multitask and adapt to changing priorities efficiently.

Job Description

The Information Technology department at Penguin Random House (PRH) is looking for a Developer to join their team. This developer will report to a Senior Manager, Application Development. Our developers build products and services that are designed well, developed fast, and provide value.The Developer will work with a small development team within PRH in a dynamic, agile development environment.

The environment you’ll be working in

  • Test automation for unit, integration
  • Docker
  • Jest and Enzyme unit tests
  • AWS, Pantheon web hosting

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Work on existing and new web projects in the PRH Applications suite to support both internal and external users.
  • Build, test, ship, and iterate these technology products during their launch and early lifecycle as they grow and scale, in an atmosphere that fosters creativity and innovation.
  • Work closely with the team to execute on the timetables agreed in conjunction with partner teams inside and outside PRH.
  • Work in all aspects of development for the products, including infrastructure, services, and frontend development (full-stack), working in collaboration with PRH business units, systems and resources as well as outsourced technology and resources.
  • Participate in areas like flexible infrastructure (e.g., AWS), RESTful APIs and service-based architecture, DevOps. The role involves working with the latest technologies, with a focus on automating tasks where possible and building tools as part of the frontend development workflow.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in all forms of communication with internal and external customers
  • Possess strong problem solving and decision-making skills while using good judgment.
  • Multi-task and change from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.
Qualifications
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with web-based technologies
  • Strong knowledge with modern web standards including HTML5, CSS3, and ES6+
  • Basic understanding of WordPress development
  • Knowledge of AWS environment, i.e. S3, containers, Lambda functions, Cognito
  • Website Accessibility
  • Knowledge of OWASP top 10 security threats
  • Strong understanding of database concepts and ability to write complex and optimized queries in databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL
  • Familiarity with AI tools (e.g., Copilot, LLM-based tools)
  • Basic understanding of:
    • Prompt engineering
    • LLMs / generative AI concepts
  • Working knowledge of object-oriented design
  • Familiarity with agile software development methodology
  • Familiarity with source code control

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience integrating AI APIs into applications
  • Experience building AI-powered features (chatbots, recommendations, search)
  • Familiarity designing and implementing RESTful APIs
Additional Information

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $115,000. All positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.

The salary range listed is specific to each particular open position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the individual role, and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
