Job description

Job Title: Detentions Captain
Department: Sheriff’s Office
Reports To: Undersheriff
Classification: Full-Time, Exempt
Compensation Range: $90,509-98,901 annually

Position Summary

Under general direction, plans, organizes, oversees, coordinates, and manages the staff of a major functional area of the Sheriff’s Office; participates in the development of policies and strategies for division operations; manages the effective use of division or unit resources to improve organizational productivity and public service; provides complex and responsible support to assigned management personnel in areas of expertise; and performs related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Directs, manages, and supervises Detentions, Court Security and Inmate Transports within the Detentions division; continuously monitors the efficiency and effectiveness of assigned programs, service delivery methods, and procedures; assesses workload, administrative, and support systems; identifies opportunities and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Oversees all administrative functions in the assigned division; ensures related functions and activities comply with established standards, requirements, internal controls, laws, codes, statutes, regulations, ordinances, policies, and procedures; coordinates the division’s work with other divisions of the department.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the division; evaluates divisional operations and determines if new or revised rules, regulations, policies, or procedures are necessary.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates Detentions staff including Sergeants, Corporals, Detentions Deputies and Court Security Deputies; coordinates division personnel and payroll functions; works with employees to correct deficiencies; and implements discipline and termination procedures.
  • Manages the division budget; directs budgeting activities and maintains fiscal control; determines funding needs for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; ensures compliance with budgeted funding.
  • Administers contracts and grants; negotiates contracts; ensures compliance with County specifications, service quality, and other requirements.
  • Conducts internal investigations, prepares written reports and recommendations; reviews reports and material gathered by subordinates; ensures compliance with standards, requirements, and procedures; prepares material for court.
  • Procures goods and services; maintains departmental equipment; ensures proper maintenance of all equipment.
  • Consults with and advises executive-level staff on matters relating to division activities; prepares oral and written reports; presents reports to commissions, committees, and boards.
  • Serves as liaison for department with other County departments, divisions, and outside agencies; provides staff support to commissions, committees, and task forces as necessary.
  • Attends professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in law enforcement; researches emerging products and enhancements and their applicability to County needs.
  • Monitors changes in regulations and technology that may affect operations; implements policy and procedural changes after approval.
  • Receives, investigates, and responds to complex and sensitive problems and complaints in a professional manner; identifies findings and takes corrective action.
  • Directs establishment and maintenance of working and official division files.
  • Ensures staff compliance with County and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Serves as the Sheriff’s representative on review boards and committees.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • Associates level or equivalent college credit hours or above.
  • Five (5) years of Law Enforcement experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience performing duties at a level equivalent to the classification of Sheriff’s Sergeant.
  • Experience with law enforcement related administrative duties and grants.
  • At least one leadership class certification (POST/CSOC/LEEDA) or equivalent.
  • At least one instructor certification in a law enforcement related field.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.
  • Current POST and applicable instructor skills certifications (firearms, arrest control, driving skills, etc.) considered for incentive bonuses.
Special Requirements
  • Qualify for security clearance through a background investigation including medical, psychological evaluations, fingerprint check, and credit check.
  • Admission to deputization by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, stand‑by, overtime, and travel within and outside the County.
  • Ability to complete additional training as required, including firearms orientation and range training, and requalify to carry all duty firearms regularly.
  • Maintain peace officer qualifications required by the State of Colorado.

  • Effective oral and written communication, spelling, grammar, punctuation.
  • Knowledge of equipment and communication tools used for business functions and coordination, including computers and relevant software.
Physical Demands
  • Monitors and performs activities in a standard office setting and on the field, requiring occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, and pulling objects up to 15 lbs.
  • Possesses vision and manual dexterity required to operate emergency response vehicles and maintain firearms qualifications.
  • Exhibits hearing and speaking ability for personal, group, and telephone communication.
  • Has finger and manual dexterity to access data entry tools such as computer keyboards.
  • Capable of working in both office and field environments with varying physical conditions.
  • Has strength, stamina, and agility to handle situations that may require rapid responses or physical confrontation.
