Summary

Examples of duties

  8. 8. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
  9. 9. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
  10. 10. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
Qualifications
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
  • Must be knowledgeable and stay up to date on laws and policies as they relate to the operation of the Detention Center.
  • Ability to foster and create effective working relationships with all personnel within and outside the agency.
  • Shall encourage and support the highest quality of workplace team interaction and behavior.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility in terms of purchasing and scheduling.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality with criminal and investigative information
  • Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations, controlling emotions, and resolving issues quickly and efficiently, using sound judgement.
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written communication, decision making, problem solving, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to identify, address employee morale issues and mediate employee conflicts.
  • Ability to maintain and manage employee time records with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and required overtime.
  • Ability to be willing to learn; flexible and adaptable to changing technology, conditions and workloads.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum age of 18. High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must pass TLETS access and CJIS awareness course within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Basic Detention Officer's training including knowledge of regulations for detention area conduct and operations, knowledge of first aid and five years Detention Officer experience or equivalent or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Must pass a Municipal Jailer training class approved by the department. Must receive Intoxilyzer certification within one year from date of hire or at the earliest available opportunity thereafter.
  • Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check, polygraph and credit check. Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
  • Due to Criminal Justice Information Security (CJIS) requirements, the candidate must never have been convicted, put on court-ordered community supervision, or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order. Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Deferred Adjudication, or Felony Conviction are permanent disqualifiers.
  • Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, functional assessment screening (Level 1), Titmus vision screening, Ishihara vision screening, and a smell test.
