Job summary

Oklahoma County Detention Center seeks a Detention Officer to support around-the-clock security and inmate supervision. You will complete jail training, enforce rules, handle crises, and document activities in reports. The role requires resilience, physical ability, and commitment to safety.

The 12-hour shifts rotate 2 on/2 off/3 on/2 off/2 on/3 off, with day and night options and overtime eligibility. Cadet salary starts during training, with increases after completion and first year.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license where applicable.
• Complete/pass background check and drug screening.
• Complete 8 week detention academy training (academics and physical training).
• No Felony conviction.
• Ability to work in loud and sometimes chaotic environment.
• Available to work days, nights, weekends, holidays or other special shifts.
• Stand or sit for extended periods.
• Lift at least 50lbs, squat, bend and climb stairs.

Responsibilities

• Maintain constant supervision and control of inmates within the detention facility.
• Conduct regular security checks, monitor surveillance systems, and ensure the secure confinement of inmates.
• Perform thorough searches of inmates, cells, and common areas to prevent possession of contraband.
• Enforce facility rules and regulations, address rule violations and take disciplinary actions.
• Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, including medical situations, disturbances, and fire incidents.
• Administer first aid when necessary and assist in emergency response procedures.
• Document daily activities, incidents, and observations in clear and accurate reports.
• Maintain effective communication with fellow team members, supervisors, the public, and inmates.
• Handle crisis situations and disturbances, employing de-escalation techniques to maintain order.
• Interact with inmates professionally and respectfully, addressing concerns and sharing information within policy scope.
• Participate in ongoing training programs to enhance skills and stay current with policies and procedures.
• Work collaboratively with other detention officers, law enforcement agencies, and support staff.
• Oversee inmate activities, ensuring compliance with guidelines and facilitating rehabilitative programs.
• Safely deliver meals, clothing, mail, and other approved items to inmates following established protocols.
• Contribute to a safe and orderly detention environment with a culture of respect and accountability.

About the Role

The position of Detention Officer is an entry-level position of the Oklahoma County Detention Center. A Detention Officer assists in the around-the-clock operation of the Oklahoma County Detention Center in accordance with the established procedures and requirements outlined in federal/state laws, the Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority, and the Oklahoma Department of Health regulations and guidelines. Detention Center officers must complete authorized jail training programs to perform their duties. The training program is designed to ensure proper monitoring and provide effective instruction throughout the new recruit’s training in accordance with federal and state laws. Officers are trained in many other areas pertaining to their work environment, safety and security, and job-related duties. Officers receive training in handcuffing, chemical weapons, and defensive tactics.
Detention Officers are under the direct supervision of the shift commanders. Detention staff must have the flexibility to respond to crisis situations and make a split-second decision; possess the physical ability to restrain or assist in the restraint of hostile inmates; possess computer knowledge sufficient to operate the detention center’s computer systems; possess administrative proficiency to ensure proper accountability of inmates property, funds, and the care taking of the population. Detention Officers must comply with all policies and procedures set forth by the Jail Administrator.

Shift and Schedule

The position involves working a 12-hour shift pattern with the following rotation: 2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, 2 days off, 2 day on, and 3 days off. This schedule provides a balanced work-life structure for employees with 14 shifts every 4 weeks.
Specialty schedules are 5 days per week with varying days off as shift work.
Facility operates 7 day per week / 365 days per year.
Night shift / 6 pm to 6 am.
Day shift / 6 am to 6 pm
Overtime eligible

Starting Annual Salary

Cadet - $40,000 (during 8 week training)
Detention Officer - $47,000 (after training completion)
and $50,000+ after 1st year.
