Marin County Detention Health Services provides health care to incarcerated individuals of Marin County within the adult and juvenile jail facilities. Detention Health Services is a health care delivery system that is managed by the County of Marin’s Health and Human Services Department’s Division of Public Health.
Under direction of the Nursing Services Manager, the Detention Nurse Practitioner (DNP) performs complete medical history and physical exams on incarcerated patients, initiates diagnostic tests, evaluates findings, and prescribes medical treatment plans. In addition, the DNP collaborates with Social Services and Behavioral Health jail staff on comprehensive inmate treatment plans. The DNP provides direct patient assessment and evaluation. They also provide and direct patient care and treatment and oversee the implementation and evaluation of the inmate treatment plans. The DNP provides support and advanced direction of acute and chronic medical needs within the jail facility.
There is currently one (1) full‑time fixed term Detention Nurse Practitioner vacancy in the Department of Health and Public Services’ Division of Public Health.
This is a 2 year (24 months) fixed‑term position. This position is budgeted for 2 years. However, there may be opportunities for the hired individual during this time‑period to move to a regular, ongoing position as other vacancies or promotional opportunities occur, or the position may be funded and converted to an ongoing position. Fixed‑term employment ends when the position’s funding finishes, or the work is completed. Employees in these positions are exempt from the County’s policies regarding lay‑off order and reduction‑in‑force rights.
Our highly qualified candidate has experience working in a high security environment such as, correctional facilities, prisons, or detention health services. They have the ability to manage complex relationships and collaborate as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Our highly qualified candidate has resilience to work in a stressful and sometimes chaotic environment, excellent judgment and decision‑making skills, and effective written and oral communication skills. The ideal Detention Nurse Practitioner has demonstrated proficiency utilizing an electronic medical record system to document medication delivery and patient treatment information.

Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner training program that conforms to Board of Registered Nursing standards, including training and/or education in area of subspecialty.
Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of appointment, a current Furnishing Number issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing, may be required for some positions.

Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff’s Department and must pass a Department of Justice Live Scan background check prior to appointment.
All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker‑related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
