Job summary

County of Pamlico in North Carolina is seeking a Detention Officer to perform protective service work, process inmates, and maintain Detention Center security, including transporting inmates to court, medical facilities, and related sites.

The role requires observing and accompanying inmates, conducting head counts, searches, and record keeping; exercising tact and decisiveness in routine and emergency situations while complying with policies, procedures, and certifications.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.
• Must obtain NC Correction Officer Certification within one year of employment.
• Must be at least 21 years old at date of hire.

Responsibilities

• Ensures safety and security of inmates; patrols to maintain order; conducts head counts and cell searches.
• Receives and processes inmates; searches inmates; manages personal property; assists inmates with attorney/relative calls.
• Operates electronic door system and control panel; maintains key and radio control.
• Supervises inmates during meals and activities for conformance to Detention Center rules.
• Escorts and transports inmates to court and other required appointments.
• Delivers food to inmates, removes trays and food carts.
• Distributes medication to inmates as prescribed or directed; contacts nurse in emergencies.
• Records visits; ensures safety and security of visitors; inspects items brought into the Detention Center; checks mail.
• Receives, receipts and accounts for funds deposited into inmate accounts.
• Prepares and maintains logs, reports, and records; organizes files; responds to inquiries.
• Performs general maintenance and cleaning of the Detention Center; reports maintenance issues.
