Job summary

Richland County Government is seeking a seasoned corrections lieutenant to lead security and operations within its detention facilities. The role emphasizes staff supervision, safety audits, and efficient transport of detainees, with a focus on adherence to established protocols.

Candidates must have an associate degree, 7 years in corrections, 3–5 years in leadership, and certifications from SC CJ Academy; a valid driver’s license is required, and national certifications should be pursued

Qualifications

• Requires an associate’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Seven (7) years of experience in a correctional environment, including 3–5 years in a leadership or managerial capacity as a lieutenant or higher, overseeing a detainee population of 500+.
• Experience working in a detention facility is required.
• Must possess Jail Officer and Jail Management certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy.
• Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
• Must meet ACA, AJA, NSA, or NIJO national certification within one year of hire.
• NCIC certification desired.
• Must possess Class II officer certification or be able to obtain certification within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Performs administrative duties using the computer and telephone; handles correspondence and memorandums; orders necessary supplies each week; and completes weekly work schedules.
• Supervises assigned staff; completes/reviews staff evaluations; attends Command Staff meetings; and medical and mental health transports.
• Ensures inspections and spot checks of safety and security functions; makes sure personnel follow protocols.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
