Qualifications

• Requires High School graduation or GED; college coursework preferred.
• Must be 21+ years old.
• Must hold DCJS certification as a Police Officer in Virginia.
• 3–5 years of experience as a Virginia DCJS Certified Police Officer or Detective preferred.
• Must be certified as a Police Officer in Virginia.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Safety sensitive; subject to alcohol and controlled substances testing.
• Background investigation, polygraph, and physical agility exam required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct searches, surveillance, investigations and arrests with other police personnel.
• Enforce City of Hampton and Virginia laws and ordinances.
• Investigate suspicious conditions and determine probable cause for violations.
• Address criminal complaints and take corrective action.
• Perform preliminary investigations and assist other personnel.
• Carry out detailed follow-up investigations, gather evidence, interview and arrest as needed.
• Assist in prosecution by filing case reports to the Commonwealth's Attorney.
• Provide public information about laws and ordinances.
• Ensure completeness and quality of case reports per division requirements.
• Coordinate with other agencies to serve the community.
• Train officers temporarily assigned to Investigative Services.
• Counsel individuals and guardians on case-related matters, ensuring rights and responsibilities are clear.
