Job summary
Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an experienced Design/Drafter to create and revise CAD models and drawings for complex weapon design projects. You will develop modeling structures for large programs, participate in design reviews, and collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to define requirements and design solutions.
Level 3 or 4 responsibilities include mentoring teammates, leading design tasks, and ensuring conformance to standards.
Qualifications

- Modeling and drawing drafting principles; application of standards, symbols, notes, and GD&T on drawings and models.
- Component and tool design, fixturing, schematics, and tooling equipment.
- Experience with machine shop equipment such as a mill, lathe, drill press, welder, and inspection equipment.
- Knowledge of engineering materials for component design and manufacture.
- High-level 3D parametric CAD systems and product data management.
- Novel design solutions for static or dynamic applications.
- Application of design limits in non-routine environments.
- Engineering concepts in product data management and configuration management.

Job description
The Weapons Product Definition (E-11) group provides model-based system engineering, mechanical design engineering, and computer-aided design (CAD) support to active stockpile weapons systems, hydrodynamic tests, sub‑critical experiments, and related qualification efforts. This position is open for external candidates only to apply. The position will be filled at either the Design/Drafter 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and skills using 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts, and engineering concepts. You will independently define modeling structure for large, complex design projects, resolve design package issues by facilitating design reviews, and collaborate with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly, and testing. Design/Drafters at this level perform complex calculations to solve technical problems for fit, form, and function and may mentor lower-level designers.
- Create and revise CAD models, drawing packages, markups, and associated Product Data Management records.
- Apply engineering policies, procedures, drafting standards, and design practices to assigned work.
- Apply materials knowledge, dimensioning strategies, ASME Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual expectations, and perform drawing checks.
- Independently lead novel design solutions for unique, non‑standard, static or dynamic design challenges.
- Work with engineers, customers, and stakeholders to define requirements and develop appropriate design solutions.
- Support or lead estimating, schedule planning, design strategies, and fabrication‑readiness activities.
- Facilitate design reviews, clarify discipline interfaces, and resolve drawing/model compatibility issues.
- Develop or support novel design solutions for unique, non‑standard, static or dynamic design challenges.

Experience using industry standards such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y series and design/drafting standards, including Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as related to the design field.
Responsible for the development and design of large projects and works directly with customers to define requirements for the design solution. Ability to work on diverse teams, collaborate on designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance, and facilitate design reviews with stakeholders.
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must communicate efficiently and effectively to advise engineers in dimensioning strategies.
At this level, in addition to what was outlined at the lower level, a Design/Drafter 4 may serve as a team lead and subject matter expert on process or product improvement activities, define standards and best practices, and guide multidisciplinary design decisions. May assign tasks to and monitor work of employees when assigned lead responsibilities.
Level 3: Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience (or an equivalent combination).
Level 4: Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 5 years of related experience (or an equivalent combination).
- An Associate’s of Science degree in design/drafting or engineering practices.
- Experience with Creo Parametric 3D CAD Software and PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management Software.
- Experience with practices and procedures used in the Nuclear Security Enterprise for conveying design intent to other national laboratories and production plants.
- Active Q clearance, or ability to obtain a Q clearance.
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible for posted jobs across the Laboratory. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
