  • Participate in design critiques and system reviews, providing feedback grounded in systematic thinking
A day in the life

As a Design Systems Designer at AHS, you might start your morning using AI tooling to generate component variant explorations that would have taken hours manually — then refining the best options with your craft eye. After standup with the systems team, you'll spend focused time in Figma evolving a component's visual states, leveraging AI-assisted prototyping to test responsive behavior across breakpoints. In the afternoon you'll partner with an engineer to review a coded implementation against your spec — possibly using a design-to-code pipeline to bridge the gap — then collaborate with design and tech teams to define patterns for a new UI surface. You'll contribute to automated documentation workflows and end the day exploring visual directions for an upcoming token update — balancing craft with systematic rigor and a bias toward experimentation.

About the team

You'll join the AHS Design Systems team within the Amazon Health Services organization — a small, focused group building the foundational layer that enables all of our product designers to do their best work. We're actively integrating AI into our own workflows — from component generation to documentation to code handoff — and we want people who are excited to push that forward. You'll work alongside teammates in Seattle, San Francisco, and Boston, partnering closely with product designers, front-end engineers, and accessibility specialists. We value craft, experimentation, and supporting each other's growth.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of design experience
  • Have an available online portfolio
  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment to deliver high-quality design solutions
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong visual design skills and systematic design thinking — showing how individual components connect to a larger system
  • Experience building and maintaining design systems, pattern libraries, or component libraries
  • Understanding of how design decisions translate to code
  • Strong eye for typography, color, spacing, and visual hierarchy
  • Active use of or strong curiosity about AI tools to accelerate design systems work — component generation, variant exploration, automated documentation, design-to-code pipelines
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of mobile and web design patterns and accessibility standards
  • Experience with motion design
  • Experience building or contributing to a production design system used by multiple product teams
  • Experience designing patterns for AI/ML interfaces — generative UI, conversational experiences, or AI-assisted workflows
  • Familiarity with AI tooling for design workflows (generative AI for exploration, prototyping automation, design-to-code pipelines)
