Job summary

Procon Consulting is seeking an experienced Design Manager to support a federal facilities management team in coordinating design across multiple projects. You will serve as the liaison between stakeholders, architects, engineers, and project management to ensure design requirements are clearly defined and carried through each phase.

The role requires leading multidisciplinary coordination, development of design deliverables, and oversight of design submissions with A/E firms.

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years in design management, engineering, architecture, construction, or related environment.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams (architectural, structural, MEP, etc.).
  • Experience coordinating with A/E firms and managing design submissions and reviews.
  • Strong knowledge of design development, construction documents, constructability, and related processes.
  • Ability to maintain design management tools (schedules, milestone trackers, logs, matrices, risk registers).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and design reviews.

Procon is seeking an experienced Design Manager to support a federal facilities management team in the planning, coordination, review, and management of design activities across multiple facility and construction projects.

The Design Manager will serve as a key liaison between project stakeholders, architects and engineers (A/E), and project management teams to ensure design requirements are clearly defined, coordinated across disciplines, and successfully carried through each phase of design.

This position does not offer employment visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in design management, engineering, architecture, construction, or a related project environment, including demonstrated responsibility for managing the design process.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams, including architectural, structural, mechanical/HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, and other applicable disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating with A/E firms and managing design submissions, stakeholder reviews, comment resolution, and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Strong understanding of design development, construction documents, constructability, and the overall design and construction process.
  • Experience developing and maintaining design management tools such as schedules, milestone trackers, comment logs, requirements matrices, action-item logs, design deliverable trackers, and risk registers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, problem-solving, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple concurrent projects, design reviews, priorities, and deliverables.
  • Preferred: Active Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) license, or current PMP or CCM certification.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting projects within occupied federal facilities or similarly secure/controlled environments.
  • Familiarity with applicable building and life-safety requirements, including IBC, NFPA standards, ABA Accessibility Standards, and applicable permitting requirements is preferred.
Responsibilities & Duties
  • Manage and coordinate design activities across multiple facility and construction projects of varying size, scope, and complexity.
  • Work with project stakeholders to identify, develop, confirm, and document project design requirements.
  • Develop and/or support the development of Statements of Work (SOWs) for architectural, engineering, and facility projects.
  • Serve as a primary coordination point with A/E firms throughout the design process.
  • Manage design submission cycles, including distributing design packages, coordinating stakeholder reviews, consolidating comments, and tracking comment resolution.
  • Coordinate design meetings and document key decisions, requirements, action items, and outstanding issues.
  • Perform multidisciplinary reviews of drawings, specifications, studies, and other technical design documents for coordination, constructability, completeness, and potential impacts to project scope, cost, schedule, and facility operations.
  • Identify and coordinate interdisciplinary issues involving architectural, structural, mechanical/HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, civil/site, and other disciplines.
  • Develop and maintain design schedules, milestone trackers, requirements matrices, comment/resolution logs, design deliverable trackers, action-item logs, and risk registers.
  • Monitor design progress and proactively identify risks, conflicts, and issues requiring management attention.
  • Prepare monthly design status reports summarizing progress, outstanding decisions, design risks, and upcoming milestones.
  • Support design acceptance, procurement planning, and the transition of projects from design into construction.
  • Provide quality-assurance reviews of A/E deliverables while maintaining the A/E firm's responsibility as Designer of Record for technical accuracy, code compliance, and professional design requirements.
Physical Requirements

This position requires regular onsite presence in an active construction environment. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:

  • Walking and standing for extended periods while performing site observations and inspections.
  • Navigating active construction areas, including stairs, uneven surfaces, temporary walkways, and varying elevations.
  • Occasionally bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and climbing as necessary to observe construction activities.
  • Accessing mechanical, electrical, utility, process, and other construction areas as required.
  • Wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) and complying with all applicable site safety requirements.
  • Working in indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to typical construction-site conditions, including noise, dust, weather, and temperature fluctuations.
  • Occasionally lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds.
