Design Manager – PHX

This role supports all aspects of major technical programs targeting both colocation and hyperscale builds, overseeing employees and third‑party organizations during the preconstruction, design, and construction phases. The Design Manager works under supervision, demonstrating strong communication, organizational, and time‑management skills while driving efficiencies and innovation. The position requires a collaborative mindset, exceptional service orientation, and the ability to manage design compliance and cost controls across multiple stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead projects from inception to customer or business turnover, focusing on preconstruction and design stages.
  • Coordinate with land‑enablement, permitting, easements, and environmental groups to ensure offsite improvements succeed.
  • Create and maintain project risk registers from land enablement through completion.
  • Onboard and manage third‑party design teams, establishing schedules and deliverables.
  • Oversee design deliverables, stakeholder reviews, and comment cycles.
  • Hold design teams accountable to design progression, gating, and cost control logs (CCL, CDE matrices).
  • Collaborate with CM for communication, escalation, and reporting to internal and external parties.
  • Maintain project dashboards in Smartsheets and complete administrative duties related to design management.
  • Assist CM with budget and cost models for design phases, prepare funding requests, and quarterly updates for leadership.
  • Conduct technical reviews of construction plans with architectural understanding and communicate concepts to internal teams.
  • Support program activities with architects, consultants, GCs, and other vendors; promote safety and compliance onsite.
  • Act as primary support to CM from GC mobilization to turnover to Operations.
  • Integrate with sales and solutions engineering during the revenue generation process to meet customer technical deliverables.
  • Interface with customers through fit‑out design, construction, and integration; ensure delivery of customer contracts.
  • Manage projects with business directives of CRC/SLT/Board and pursue continuous improvement, creativity, efficiency, and innovation.
Desired Working Experience and Knowledge
  • Design engineering experience.
  • Building design process and deliverables management.
  • Management of design teams.
  • Exposure to IPD, Design‑Build, and/or construction management.
  • Data center design/construction experience, especially with MEP systems.
  • Project management software (MS Projects, Prolog, Procore, BIM 360, etc.).
  • Knowledge and experience with CAD (plus).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years progressive experience managing commercial construction project design programs; data center experience strongly preferred.
  • Mechanical / Electrical background preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, Smartsheets, and/or AutoCAD.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi‑task with strong time and change management/organizational skills.
  • Maintain discretion and confidentiality.
  • Follow clear directions, meet deadlines, and communicate schedules.
  • Team player across the organization.
  • Interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of cost estimating methods and scope development.
  • Understand and interpret project scopes, design and schedule changes, forecasting impacts on costs.
  • Travel up to 25% as needed.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • Frequently required to bend, climb, and use hand and finger dexterity.
  • Occasional work near moving mechanical parts.
Compensation
  • $110,000 – $190,000 plus bonus.
