Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Design Engineering Specialist to design, develop, build, and implement new engine products and components.

You will help design and troubleshoot 7L-9L inline-6 diesel engine systems for machines, gensets, and external sales opportunities. You will guide design evolution, perform testing, analyze materials, and oversee prototype fabrication and reliability testing to ensure safety, quality, and cost targets.

Qualifications

  • Degree in accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.
  • Analytical thinking with root-cause analysis and structured problem solving.
  • Experience in design engineering, development, testing, and project planning.

Responsibilities

  • Develop design parameters, performance characteristics, and technical specs for products and components.

About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Caterpillar’s company strategy includes sustainability as one of four focus areas and IPSD is engaged and actively preparing green energy solutions for the future.

Role Definition

We are seeking a Design Engineering Specialist. This person will focus on designing, developing, building, and implementing new products, components, or technologies. You will be responsible for helping design and troubleshoot 7L-9L inline-6 diesel engine systems for use in machines, gensets, and external engine sales opportunities.

What You Will Do
  • Develop design parameters, performance characteristics, and technical specifications of products and components that satisfy customer needs and advance safety, quality, velocity and cost.
  • Guiding the evolution of the technical design, technical project planning, detail design, and development testing. Participating in supplier selection and capabilities assessment.
  • Monitoring, exploring, and testing new technologies, materials, and components to understand product or process improvement opportunities.
  • Constructing and fabricating prototype equipment; overseeing materials selection, process optimization and process yield, as well as reliability testing and failure analysis.
Degree Requirement

Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

  • Matches testing methodology and tools to product being tested; develops test scenarios and scripts.
  • Estimates time, effort and resources required for thorough testing.
Troubleshooting Technical Problems

Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product development environment.

Level Extensive Experience:

  • Evaluates business impact of failure and the criticality and timing of needed resolution.
  • Resolves difficult or high-impact equipment and systems problems.
  • Monitors machine performance and history; addresses excessive maintenance or repair needs.

Summary Pay Range

$128,470.00 - $192,710.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
