Job summary

Muller Engineering Company is seeking a Stormwater/Drainage Design Engineer to join the Transportation Hydraulics team for Colorado projects with a spring/summer 2027 start. The role covers stormwater drainage design, detention, floodplain analysis, and permitting, including bridge hydraulics and scour analyses.

Ideal candidates have a Civil Engineering degree and 0–4 years of related experience; familiarity with HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, CUHP, SWMM, and Civil 3D/OpenRoads is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or closely related field.
  • 0–4 years of experience with emphasis on stormwater design.
  • Exposure to hydrologic and hydraulic modeling programs (HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, CUHP, SWMM).
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design stormwater improvements (drain systems, detention, floodplain evaluations, channel stabilization).
  • Provide hydrologic/hydraulic support for Colorado transportation projects across roads, interchanges, and bridges.
  • Coordinate drainage design with roadway, structures, traffic, utilities, and environmental teams.
  • Prepare construction drawings, quantities, specifications, and provide construction engineering support.

Job description

Stormwater/Drainage Design Engineer

Muller Engineering is seeking qualified stormwater candidates at the Design Engineer level. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and technically skilled professional who is eager to contribute to impactful transportation projects throughout Colorado. A spring/summer 2027 start date is preferred.


This position is specifically for Muller’s Transportation Hydraulics team, which specializes in storm drain and drainageway design, erosion and sediment control, bridge and culvert scour, floodplain analysis and permitting, stormwater detention, and water quality as it relates to transportation infrastructure and its impacts on adjacent waterways.


Muller Engineering is based in Lakewood, Colorado, and offers a hybrid work schedule that supports both in-person collaboration and flexibility. Responsibilities


  • Design stormwater improvements, including storm drain systems, culverts, ditches, detention and stormwater quality features, floodplain evaluations, channel stabilization, bridge hydraulics and scour analyses, gravity irrigation conveyance and diversion, erosion and sediment control, and environmental permitting support.

  • Provide hydrologic and hydraulic engineering support for Muller’s transportation projects throughout Colorado, including roadways, highways, interchanges, regional trails, multimodal corridors, pedestrian access improvements, and bridges.

  • Coordinate drainage design with roadway, structures, traffic, utilities, and environmental team members to produce timely, high-quality deliverables that meet or exceed project goals.

  • Prepare construction drawings, develop construction quantities and specifications, write technical reports, provide construction engineering support, and guide the work of technicians.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Education And/or Experience Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

  • 0–4 years of experience with an emphasis on the design of stormwater improvements.

  • Exposure to hydrologic and hydraulic modeling programs such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, CUHP, SWMM, and storm drain, culvert, or open-channel design tools.

  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented professional with strong organizational skills.


Required License Or Certification


  • Colorado Engineer Intern (EI) certification.


Salary Range: $75,000/year - $92,000/year, dependent on individual education, experience, and qualifications.
