Job summary

Sargent Aerospace & Defense seeks a Hydraulics Design Engineer to support the Marine product line, leading design concepts for hydraulic valves and actuator systems. You will apply FEA, GD&T, and DFMEA to ensure robust, reliable components across the lifecycle, from design through testing and production.

The role requires collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams, rigorous attention to detail, and strong communication skills to meet customer specifications and project

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or related) required or equivalent.
  • 5+ years engineering experience across lifecycle stages.
  • Proficiency with FEA/ANSYS and GD&T.
  • Experience with fatigue, fastener, and material/process control.
  • 3D modeling experience in CREO or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety is foundational in daily work and project execution.
  • Perform engineering analyses (stress/FEA, fatigue) to support new products and sustain existing designs.
  • Create and review designs per customer requirements and engineering principles.
  • Apply GD&T and tolerance analysis to enable inspection and manufacturing.
  • Develop test plans/reports to demonstrate compliance with specifications.
  • Interact with customers to clarify design intent and requirements.
  • Maintain project records and design/test data.
  • Develop technical proposals, cost estimates and schedules for non-recurring engineering.
  • Direct engineers and drafters on design concepts to meet deadlines.
  • Serve as technical lead on development and qualification test programs.
  • Participate in MRB to disposition non-conforming product.

Design Engineer III – Hydraulic Valves & Mechanisms

Sargent Aerospace & Defense is a premier global supplier of custom engineered, high quality products to the Aerospace and Defense Industries. Sargent Aerospace & Defense products are found on many major Commercial and Military aircraft in operation worldwide. Products and systems include hydraulic actuation and valve systems, locking actuators, steering metering control valves, fuse pins, hot forged bolts, pneumatic ducting and valve seals, tubing system alignment joints, engine hot section and structural components, airframe components, shock strut bearings, PTFE lined spherical bearings and broad component maintenance, overhaul, spares logistics and power-by-the-hour support services.

Sargent is also a major supplier of hydraulic components to the US Navy on all Nuclear Class Submarine programs. Products and systems in this product line include directional control valves, flow control valves, metering valves, restrictor valves, check valves, and electro-hydraulic servo valves. This product line, called the Marine product line, emphasizes stringent adherence to customer technical requirements while delivering a highly reliable product to withstand demanding in-service applications.

Sargent has an immediate opening for a Hydraulics Design Engineer to support the Marine product line.

Purpose & Scope

The Design Engineer will report to the Engineering Manager and is responsible for applying the principles and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems in design, manufacturing, research & development, sales, inspection, and maintenance. The employee in this role will collaborate with peers within all the key business units to provide a robust & timely solution to the customers’ current and future design challenges.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Ensure that safety is the foundation of daily work through vigilance and accountability.
  • Perform engineering analysis (stress, FEA, fatigue) and apply problem-solving methods to support new product development and/or sustaining production of existing designs.
  • Create & review new designs for conformance to customer requirements & and proper application of engineering principles.
  • Apply, evaluate, and optimize Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to facilitate inspection and manufacturing.
  • Write & review test plans and test reports in support of new programs to demonstrate compliance to customer specifications.
  • Interact with customers to clarify design intent and technical requirements.
  • Maintain accurate, orderly project records, including design and test data, customer specifications, directives, etc.
  • Develop technical proposals, cost estimates & schedules for non-recurring engineering activities.
  • Direct fellow engineers as well as designers & drafters in design concepts and optimization to meet strict deadlines.
  • Serve as technical lead on development and qualification test programs.
  • Direct others and serve as engineering representative on the Material Review Board (MRB) to facilitate disposition of non-conforming product.
Required Job Knowledge, Skills And Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years engineering experience in any/all aspects of a product’s lifecycle – from initial design phase, through procurement and testing of a prototype, transition to production phase, and involvement in long term product support.
  • A lower level of experience combined with an advanced degree may be considered.
  • Proficiency with finite element analysis (FEA), ANSYS preferred.
  • Proficiency with Geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance analysis.
  • Proficiency with fatigue analysis, fastener analysis, and material & process control.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling software (Pro/Engineer or CREO preferred).
  • Previous experience with Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA).
  • Excellent writing, presentation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent MS Office skills.
  • Self-starter who demonstrates a sense of urgency in meeting customer expectations and delivering results.
  • Ability to investigate, diagnose and resolve complex technical problems and communicate in clear simple terms.
  • Attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of this position.
Preferred Job Knowledge, Skills And Experience
  • Highly Valued - Work experience directly related to hydraulic and/or electromechanical component design and/or manufacture & test (servos, actuators, control valves, manifolds, etc...)
  • Highly Valued - Familiarity with electronic and/or hydraulic control system design.
  • Substantial ANSYS and CREO experience.
  • Substantial solid mechanics background.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink or similar coding languages.
  • Proficiency with common machining practices and/or metal forming methods & processes.
  • Electrical and/or Mechanical hands-on aptitude displayed through personal hobbies/projects.
  • Substantial troubleshooting & root cause corrective action (RCCA) experience.
  • Previous experience with DFMEA for new designs.
ITAR Requirement

Due to ITAR regulations, this position requires that the employee must be a U.S. Citizen.

Employees will participate in understanding, implementing and maintaining the Company Quality Policy in accordance with AS-9100 and/or ISO-9001 requirements.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
