Job summary

Karman Space and Defense in Mukilteo, WA, is seeking a Design Engineer III to lead the design of aerospace structures, mechanisms, and mechanical systems. You will drive concept development, perform analyses, generate documentation, and support manufacturing, testing, and delivery.

You will also contribute to new business development and mentor junior engineers. You have a BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 4–7 years in aerospace/defense, proficiency in SolidWorks and GD&T, and a DoD

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent experience and DoD clearance/ability to obtain.
  • 4–7 years aerospace/defense experience.
  • Experience leading robust hardware designs.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks; GD&T knowledge.
  • Familiar with CAD/CAE tools for mechanical systems.
  • Current DoD Secret clearance or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design of mechanical structures, mechanisms, and systems.
  • Create 2-D layouts and 3-D models with BOMs.
  • Perform engineering calculations to validate safety and compliance.
  • Review peers' calculations and designs.
  • Assess manufacturability, cost, and quality.
  • Support manufacturing, testing, deployment.
  • Prepare proposals and support business development.
  • Document requirements, test plans, and compliance evidence.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

Building on nearly 50 years of success, we deliver Payload & Protection Systems, Aero/Hydrodynamic Interstage Systems, and Propulsion & Launch Systems to more than 80 prime contractors supporting over 130 space and defense programs. This role is part of our Tactical Missiles and Integrated Defense Systems business, which designs and develops integrated missile and defense systems that support critical missions across air, land, and sea. We combine comprehensive analysis, engineering, and program execution capabilities to deliver mission-tailored solutions that reduce lead times, lower costs, and simplify complex multi-vendor supply chains. Backed by decades of flight-proven and fielded performance, we design and build mission-critical technologies including launch systems, propulsion, payload integration solutions, UAV components, missile subsystems, and Safe & Arm systems. As a Design Engineer III, you will lead the design of aerospace structures, mechanisms, and mechanical systems. You will drive concept development, perform engineering analysis, generate documentation and specifications, and support manufacturing, testing, and delivery. You will also contribute to new business development efforts and mentor junior engineers.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design of mechanical structures, mechanisms, and systems aligned with customer requirements and industry standards
  • Develop 2-D layout drawings, 3-D solid models, engineering documentation, bills of materials, and specifications
  • Perform mechanical engineering calculations and analyses to validate safe operation and compliance
  • Review and verify engineering calculations, analyses, and design work produced by peers and junior engineers
  • Evaluate designs for manufacturability, cost, and quality assurance considerations
  • Support manufacturing, assembly, testing, and deployment activities throughout the product lifecycle
  • Prepare proposal materials, presentations, and support business development activities
  • Document requirements, test plans, procedures, reports, and compliance evidence
  • Support bench and field testing of mechanical components and systems
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience and registration
  • 4-7 years of aerospace and/or defense experience
  • Solid understanding of multiple mechanical engineering technologies
  • Proven experience leading the design of robust hardware
  • Detailed knowledge of design-based military and commercial specifications
  • Proficient in SolidWorks; experienced in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAE tools relevant to mechanical systems design
  • A current U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one
