Job summary

Southland Industries, a leading MEP design-build firm, seeks a Design Engineer II in Las Vegas to advance complex HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection designs for healthcare, education, biotech, and commercial projects. You’ll collaborate with model coordinators, estimators, and field staff to develop practical, cost-effective designs and support VDC workflows.

You’ll contribute to calculations, drawings, and specifications, mentor junior engineers, and assist with on-site surveys

Qualifications

• Four-year degree in Engineering or related field.
• PE License preferred.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience.
• Basic knowledge of applicable systems design (fire suppression, HVAC, plumbing, electrical).
• Ability to read construction documents.
• Strong verbal and written technical communication.
• Strong computer skills including CAD and Excel.

Responsibilities

• Performs more complex modeling, drawings and specifications for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection or other systems.
• Performs more complex calculations (loads, sizing, friction, hydraulics).
• May be responsible for a single phase of a project.
• Provides guidance to less experienced engineers.
• Performs on-site field surveys to collect or deliver design data.
• Assists in writing technical narratives and RFIs.
• Responsible for Code compliance.
• Independently performs most assignments with guidance on general results.
• Receives technical guidance for unusual problems and supervisor approval of plans.
• May provide technical guidance to less-experienced engineers.
• Interfaces with other disciplines, contractors, architects, and project team members.

Job description

As a Design Engineer II at Southland Industries, you'll experience the excitement of working on design-build and design-assist projects in healthcare, education, biotech, mission critical, commercial and entertainment markets. You’ll work hand in hand with our model coordinators, estimators, and trade staff through all aspects of a project to create a design that is practical, efficient and cost effective. You’ll also have access to internal teams using the most innovative practices in virtual construction design (VDC) and computational fluid dynamics, along with just-in-time feedback from the field.

• Performs more complexmodeling, drawings andspecifications relatedto HVAC, plumbing,electrical,fire protection or other systems
• Performs more complex calculations for a project, such as heating/cooling loads, equipmentselectionand sizing, friction loss calculations, hydrauliccalculations, etc.
• Maybe responsible fora single phase of a project
• Provides guidance to less experienced engineers
• Performson-site field surveys to collect or deliver design and engineering data.
• Assistsin writing technical narratives and responses to RFIs
• Responsible for Code compliance
