As a Design Engineer specializing in wood frame and mass timber buildings, your primary responsibility will be to design, analyze, and evaluate the structural components and systems of residential and commercial structures constructed primarily using wood, heavy timber, and mass timber framing. You will collaborate with a team of engineers and drafters to design innovative and efficient timber and wood frame buildings. Your skills will contribute to the successful completion of construction projects while adhering to relevant building codes and industry standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform engineering tasks neatly, accurately, and efficiently to meet budget hours estimate provided by supervisor.
- Prepare engineering calculations and designs while developing skills needed for career advancement.
- Assist with developing structural plans, specifications, and construction documents for wood frame and mass timber building projects.
- Assist in obtaining field measurements and other pertinent jobsite data, as required.
- Develop communications skills through correspondence and coordination with internal clients.
- Attend design meetings, construction meetings, and site visits with experienced engineers.
- Comply with company policies and procedures.
- Participate in continuing education webinars and education sessions.
- Participate in networking and young professional events.
- After gaining experience, prepare hours estimates for project proposals for use by supervisor.
- Complete work within the allotted time and schedule as outlined by project manager.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, architectural engineering with structural emphasis, or closely related degree program is required.
- Complete and pass Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).
- 2+ years’ experience working in a structural engineering firm as an engineer in training.
- Skills
- Basic knowledge of design standards and materials used in construction.
- Ability to use RISA 3D or similar structural design and analysis software.
- Ability to present handwritten calculations in an organized and legible manner.
- Good analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and communicate effectively with internal and external clients.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software to maintain accurate project records.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or REVIT, or similar software, is a plus.

- May require standing for periods up to 10 hours a day
- Jobsites may require climbing, crawling, bending, and lifting at times.
- Remote or hybrid roles can be considered on a case by case basis.

- This position is not a supervisory position.
